House Concurrent Resolution 89

A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION TO OPPOSE THE SITING OF A HIGH-LEVEL RADIOACTIVE WASTE REPOSITORY WITHIN THE BORDERS OF THE STATE OF MISSISSIPPI.

     WHEREAS, the people of the State of Mississippi have always been leaders in supporting matters involving the national interest; and

     WHEREAS, the people of the State of Mississippi continue to support well-documented matters of national interest; and

     WHEREAS, there has been much discussion regarding the storage of high-level nuclear waste from other states at sites within the State of Mississippi; and

     WHEREAS, no one knows what the long-range effect of such storage will be; and

     WHEREAS, the Mississippi Legislature opposes the use of salt domes in the State of Mississippi for storage of high-level radioactive waste; and

     WHEREAS, the State of Mississippi is opposed to the use of its state port facilities, highways and air transportation facilities in the transportation, receipt and delivery of nuclear and high-level radioactive waste; and

     WHEREAS, the State of Mississippi through its constitutional right, reserves that right to reasonable objection for sociological, economic, environmental, technological, or institutional purposes; and

     WHEREAS, the language in this resolution was taken from Senate Concurrent Resolution 502 that was passed unanimously in 1981 by the Senate of the State of Mississippi, the House of Representatives concurring unanimously therein; and

     WHEREAS, this resolution reaffirms the unbroken thirty-two year policy of the State of Mississippi that declares our unalterable opposition to the siting of a radioactive waste repository in our state:

     NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE STATE OF MISSISSIPPI, THE SENATE CONCURRING THEREIN, That we do hereby remain unalterably opposed to the

storage of high-level nuclear waste in this state and the use of our air, land and seagoing transportation facilities for the transportation of high-level radioactive waste.

     BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That copies of this resolution be furnished to the members of the Capitol Press Corps.
