House Resolution 22

A RESOLUTION COMMENDING REPRESENTATIVE BILLY BROOMFIELD UPON HIS DISTINGUISHED SERVICE AS A MEMBER OF THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES.

     WHEREAS, Representative Billy Broomfield has served the citizens of House District 110, which encompasses Jackson County, for 22 years; and

     WHEREAS, as a resident and native of Moss Point, Mississippi, Representative Broomfield was born January 15, 1945, and received  degrees from Prentiss Institute and Enterprise Junior College; and

     WHEREAS, having answered the call to service long before entering the political area, Representative Broomfield, who is a  Vietnam veteran, bravely served this country for six years as a member of the United States Army where he was a drill instructor, which speaks volumes of his valor and leadership qualities; and

     WHEREAS, Representative Broomfield began his service with the House of Representatives in 1992, and during that time he has effectively served on a variety of committees, some of which include the following:  Apportionment and Elections, Appropriations, Gaming, Marine Resources and Military Affairs; and

     WHEREAS, in addition to serving on House committees, Representative Broomfield served as the distinguished Chairman of Ports, Harbors and Airports for eight years, and in this prestigious capacity, he ensured that all state ports, harbors and airports operated efficiently and effectively; and 

     WHEREAS, Representative Broomfield, a multi-talented individual, was also employed by Ingalls Shipbuilding in Pascagoula, Mississippi, where he retired in 2009 as a project manager after a 37-year career of selfless service; and

     WHEREAS, Representative Broomfield, a Christian, is a dedicated member of St. Paul United Methodist Church where he has served as a former lay leader and is a current member of the church's male chorus in which he lifts his melodic voice to inspire and give praise; and

     WHEREAS, as a Mason and a Shriner, Representative Broomfield is also a contributing member of a variety of organizations, some of which include the following:  American Legion, the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP), the Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) and the Magnolia Alumni Association; and 

     WHEREAS, throughout all his endeavors, Representative Broomfield has been lovingly supported by his beautiful wife of 46 years, Vera, their two daughters, Vernonia and Chanda, five grandchildren and five great-grandchildren; and

     WHEREAS, having been elected as mayor of the City of Moss Point, Mississippi, Representative Bloomfield's disciplined nature and warm heart will always be remembered as a positive influence on all of those who have had the pleasure of working with this highly respected member of the House; and

     WHEREAS, it is the policy of the House of Representatives to honor one of our own, who has represented his district, as well as this legislative body, with honor and dignity:

     NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE STATE OF MISSISSIPPI, That we do hereby commend and express deepest appreciation to Representative Billy Broomfield for his many outstanding contributions to the legislative process and the people of the State of Mississippi and extend heartiest wishes and continued success as he leads the City of Moss Point and in all of his future endeavors.

     BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That copies of this resolution be furnished to Representative Broomfield and to the members of the Capitol Press Corps.
