(As Adopted by Senate)

A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION COMMENDING AND CONGRATULATING THE CALLAWAY HIGH SCHOOL "CHARGERS" BOYS BASKETBALL TEAM AND HEAD COACH WAYNE BRENT FOR WINNING THEIR FOURTH CLASS 5A STATE CHAMPIONSHIP IN 5 YEARS AND FOR THEIR NO. 1 RANKING.

WHEREAS, Coach Wayne Brent and his Callaway High School "Chargers" Boys Basketball Team defeated the Provine Rams 69-65 on March 9, 2013, winning the Mississippi High School Activities Association Class 5A State Championship and finishing the season No. 1 in The Clarion-Ledger Super 10 ranking.  It is the fourth time in 5 years that Wayne Brent and his Chargers are taking a Gold Ball back to Beasley Road, after winning State Titles in 2009, 2010 and 2012; and

WHEREAS, it was Callaway's fifth victory in six meetings over its rival from Robinson Road this season.  For one final quarter, the much-anticipated Round 6 game between Callaway and Provine lived up to all the hype.  When it ended, Callaway survived a fierce Provine comeback and held on for a 69-65 victory in the Class 5A Boys Basketball Championship Game to claim its second straight state title.  This one wasn't pretty though.  There were 65 fouls, 92 free throws and one third-quarter fracas that could have turned ugly; and

WHEREAS, Callaway is led by Coach Wayne Brent, who just completed his 6th season at Callaway High School and won a State Championship in 4 out of the last 5 years.  He also led Callaway to No. 1 finishes last season and in 2009, and his Provine team finished No. 1 in 1998.  "It feels good," said Callaway Coach Wayne Brent.  "I didn't think we could beat them for a fifth time.  I kept telling my guys this is the only game that matters.  Our players just kept fighting and fighting"; and

WHEREAS, Callaway Dandy Dozen Sophomore Malik Newman, who said last season he would like to win four in his high school career.  Rated the nation's top sophomore, he is halfway there.  "The toughest part was playing Provine a sixth time.  When you are trying to repeat and playing your rival six times, it's hard.  But we did it"; and

WHEREAS, the victory was the second in a Gold Ball Championship Trifecta for the Jackson Public Schools, where Athletic Director Clint Johnson saw a banner Hoops Day for the Jackson Public School District (Callaway Class 5A Boys, Forest Hill Class 6A Girls, and Murrah Class 6A Boys); and

WHEREAS, the 2012-2013 Callaway "Chargers" Boys Basketball Team Roster is as follows:  Rod Taylor, Jarvis Williams, Dontarrius Simmons, Dontelius Ross, Decardo Day, Doug Chambers, Lamarcus Williams, Marlon Malbry, Malik Newman, Dominic Singleton, Keigan Haley, Marquavious Summerville, TreShawn Bolden, Dayall Harris, Cortez Mitchell, Dietrich Taylor, Wesley Harris, and Mario Kegler; Head Coach Wayne Brent; and Assistant Coaches:  Chuck Wansley, Brian Anderson and Louis Wright; and

WHEREAS, it is with great pride that we recognize this special achievement by a group of student athletes who have brought honor to their school, their community and to the State of Mississippi:

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, BY THE SENATE OF THE STATE OF MISSISSIPPI, THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES CONCURRING THEREIN, That we do hereby commend and congratulate the Callaway High School "Chargers" Boys Basketball Team and Head Coach Wayne Brent for winning their second straight Class 5A State Championship and fourth in 5 years, and extend our best wishes to the players, coaches, parents and sponsors for continued success.

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That this resolution be presented to Coach Wayne Brent and Principal Clyde Speaks for the team, forwarded to the Jackson Public School Board, and made available to the Capitol Press Corps.
