Senate Concurrent Resolution 595

(As Adopted by Senate)

A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION COMMENDING AND CONGRATULATING THE MURRAH HIGH SCHOOL "MUSTANGS" BOYS BASKETBALL TEAM AND HEAD COACH TIM SPEECH FOR WINNING THE MHSAA 6A STATE CHAMPIONSHIP.

WHEREAS, the Murrah High School "Mustangs" Boys Basketball Team added another Gold Ball to its trophy case on March 9, 2013.  None of the previous 4 Championships took quite the grit and determination of State Title No. 5 for the tradition-rich program; and

WHEREAS, this year's Mustangs persevered through a rocky start to the season to reach the top.  They capped it off by beating Madison Central 65-54 in the Mississippi High School Activities Association Class 6A Championship game at the Mississippi Coliseum; and

WHEREAS, it was the Mustangs' first State Title since Jeremy Wise and Company won it all in 2005.  The other three came under legendary Coach Orsmond Jordan; and

WHEREAS, "To get that handshake after the game from Coach Jordan is unreal," said first-year Murrah Coach Tim Speech; and

WHEREAS, it was the fifth meeting of the season between the two division foes.  The teams split the first games, but Murrah won the one that mattered most.  Not bad for a team that dropped 5 of its first 13 games after starting the season ranked No. 3 in The Clarion-Ledger Super 10.  The Mustangs (24-9) finished the season winning 12 of their last 13 games; and

WHEREAS, in the Championship game, Murrah got off to a blazing start, sprinting to a 15-2 lead that proved to be the difference, led by Dandy Dozen Senior Guard Josh Carroll.  Murrah's Malik Hines blocked Joniah White in a big man battle; and

WHEREAS, the Murrah victory capped off a stellar day for Jackson Public Schools teams:  Murrah, Callaway (5A boys) and Forest Hill (6A girls) also won state titles, marking the second straight year that the Jackson Public Schools have won 3; and

WHEREAS, the 2012-2013 Mustangs' roster is:  Jacob Ivory, Malik Hines, Marcus Love, Chris McIntosh and Josh Carroll; and Head Coach Tim Speech; and

WHEREAS, it is with great pride that we recognize this championship squad which has brought honor to their school, their community and to the State of Mississippi:

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE OF THE STATE OF MISSISSIPPI, THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES CONCURRING THEREIN, That we do hereby commend and congratulate the Murrah High School "Mustangs" Boys Basketball Team and Head Coach Tim Speech for winning the Mississippi High School Activities Association Class 6A State Championship and for their excellent 2013 season, and extend to the team, coaches, parents and sponsors our best wishes for future successes.

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That this resolution be presented to Coach Speech for the team, Murrah Principal Dr. Freddrick Murray, forwarded to the Jackson School Board, and made available to the Capitol Press Corps.
