Senate Concurrent Resolution 585

A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION COMMENDING AND CONGRATULATING SANDRA HALAT FOR BEING SELECTED AS INSTRUCTOR OF THE YEAR AT THE JEFFERSON DAVIS CAMPUS OF MISSISSIPPI GULF COAST COMMUNITY COLLEGE.

     WHEREAS, Sandra Halat, a resident of Ocean Springs, Mississippi, has been selected as Instructor of the Year at the Jefferson Davis Campus of Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College in recognition of her distinguished service to the college; and

     WHEREAS, the award was established by the Alumni Association of Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College to honor instructors at the college, and the recipient of the award is chosen from nominations submitted by students, faculty and administrators on the basis of their teaching excellence, college service, community service and professional development; and

     WHEREAS, Sandra Halat, a Visual Arts Instructor, has been employed at Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College for the past 10 years and has taught for the past 13 years as a traditional classroom and online instructor; and

     WHEREAS, Sandra Halat received her Associate of Arts Degree at Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College; Bachelor of Fine Arts Degree from the University of North Carolina, Asheville; and Master of Fine Arts Degree from the University of North Carolina, Greensboro; and

     WHEREAS, Sandra Halat is Chair of the Scholarship Program for the Mississippi Art Colony, Director of the campus Fine Art Gallery, a member of the Campus Faculty Association, and serves on the college's Martin Luther King Committee.  She is a member of the National Women in the Arts Mississippi Chapter, the Ohr-O'Keefe Museum, the Mississippi Art Colony, the Ocean Springs Art Association, and the Singing River Art Association; and

     WHEREAS, Sandra Halat is an exhibiting member of the Art House Gallery, Gallery 782, and the Attic Gallery.  She was the recipient of the 2011 National Endowment of the Humanities Grant, 2012 recipient of the Phi Theta Kappa Most Distinguished Alumni Award, worked with the "Big Read" Project and World Peace Art Program, received Best in Show for The National Ohr Juried Competition in 2001, Best in Show and the Award of Excellence at the Singing River Art Association Show in 2004, Exceptional Merit Awards and Awards of Excellence from 2001-2010 for the Ocean Springs Art Association competition, and the 2011 Award at the Ocean Springs Juried Art Association competition; and

     WHEREAS, it is with great pride that we recognize this professional educator who has dedicated her career to teaching the young people of this state:

     NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE OF THE STATE OF MISSISSIPPI, THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES CONCURRING THEREIN, That we do hereby commend and congratulate Sandra Halat for being selected as Instructor of the Year at the Jefferson Davis Campus of Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College, and extend to her our heartiest wishes for success in all her future endeavors.

     BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That this resolution be presented to Sandra Halat, forwarded to the Board of Trustees of the Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College, and made available to the Capitol Press Corps.
