Senate Concurrent Resolution 583

A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION COMMENDING AND CONGRATULATING THE STARKVILLE ACADEMY "LADY VOLS" BASKETBALL TEAM AND HEAD COACH GLENN SCHMIDT FOR WINNING THEIR REPEAT MAIS OVERALL CHAMPIONSHIP AND FOR THEIR PERFECT 2013 SEASON.

     WHEREAS, for all the superlatives sure to befall the Starkville Academy "Lady Volunteers" Girls' Basketball Team, there is just one that matters to Lady Vols' Coach Glenn Schmidt.  They will once again be called Mississippi Association of Independent Schools Overall Champions; and

     WHEREAS, following Starkville Academy's 54-33 victory over Presbyterian Christian School March 2, 2013, some sportswriters are calling this Lady Vols Team as the best ever.  Starkville Academy's repeat was the exclamation point on a perfect 43-0 season; and

     WHEREAS, following Coach Schmidt's team's 52nd straight win, Starkville Academy became the first repeat Overall Champion since Jackson Academy in 2001 and 2002.  "They're the best in the history of Glenn Schmidt," Schmidt said.  "I'm endeared to them for what they have done and been through.  We never wanted to compare ourselves to anyone else, we never wanted to go by other people's goals.  I have been in Mississippi either playing or coaching all my life, and it's hard to compare teams, but I'm taking this one"; and

     WHEREAS, Maggie Proffitt led the Lady Vols with 17 points.  Sallie Kate Richardson had 12 points and 7 rebounds.  Presbyterian Christian School Coach Missy Bilderback credited Starkville Academy's defensive pressure.  "They're a great team"; and

     WHEREAS, heading into the final game of the Class AAA State Tournament, on February 27, 2013, the pressure was on for Coach Glenn Schmidt and the Starkville Academy Lady Volunteers.  Tipping off against Madison-Ridgeland Academy, the Lady Vols played the Starkville Academy way as it claimed a 64-29 victory.  This victory was no ordinary win as it brought with it the Class AAA State Championship and the Lady Vols also improved to 40-0; and

     WHEREAS, being Class AAA State Champions after a 35-point victory and earning an Overall Tournament is thrilling, but the excitement did not stop there.  As action wrapped up, Anna Lea Little, Sallie Kate Richardson, Tiffany Huddleston, Maggie Proffitt and Nora Kathryn Carroll found themselves as members of the All-Tournament Team; and

     WHEREAS, the 2012-2013 Lady Vols Basketball Team Roster is:  Anna Lea Little, Guard; Anna McKell, Guard; Maridee Higginbotham, Guard; Hannah Huddleston, Forward; Tiffany Huddleston, Guard; Taylor Campbell, Guard; Maggie Proffitt, Guard; Sallie Kate Richardson, Forward; Nora Kathryn Carroll, Guard; McClain Morgan, Guard; Alex McCafferty, Forward; Janiece Pigg, Center; Head Coach Glenn Schmidt; Assistant Coach Kayla Mosley; Stats, Beth Crawford; and Managers, Sarah Morgan Pellum and Bonner Hughes; and

     WHEREAS, it is with great pride that we recognize the special accomplishments of this group of student athletes who have brought honor to their school, their community and to the State of Mississippi:

     NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE OF THE STATE OF MISSISSIPPI, THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES CONCURRING THEREIN, That we do hereby commend and congratulate the Starkville Academy "Lady Vols" Basketball Team and Head Coach Glenn Schmidt for winning the Mississippi Association of Independent Schools AAA State Championship and the Overall Tournament Championship, their repeating second consecutive State Title, and extend to the team, coaches, parents and sponsors our best wishes for future academic and athletic success.

     BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That this resolution be presented to Coach Schmidt and Headmaster John "Doc" Stephens for the team, forwarded to the Board of Trustees of Starkville Academy, and made available to the Capitol Press Corps.
