A RESOLUTION COMMENDING AND CONGRATULATING THE AMANDA ELZY HIGH SCHOOL BOYS BASKETBALL TEAM UPON THEIR OUTSTANDING 2012-2013 SEASON, FOR WINNING THE MISSISSIPPI HIGH SCHOOL ACTIVITIES ASSOCIATION CLASS 4A BOYS BASKETBALL CHAMPIONSHIP TITLE AND BEING BACK-TO-BACK CHAMPIONS.

     WHEREAS, the Amanda Elzy High School Boys Basketball Team, led by Head Coach Gerald Glass, achieved another towering victory over the Corinth High School Warriors in the Mississippi High School Activities Association Class 4A championship game at the Mississippi Coliseum in Jackson, Mississippi; and

     WHEREAS, as a result of this championship win, the team has won back-to-back championships as they were crowned champions last year when they defeated the Corinth High School Warriors to capture the 2012 championship win; and  

     WHEREAS, the Amanda Elzy High School Panthers displayed their athletic prowess on the court over the Corinth High School Warriors at the Mississippi High School Activities Association (MHSAA) Class 4A championship game; and

     WHEREAS, the team began with full force and momentum as the Amanda Elzy alumnus and former Panthers basketball player, Head Coach Gerald Glass, directed their passions to victory; and

     WHEREAS, after dazzling the crowd at the Mississippi Coliseum, the confetti fell for the second time on the Amanda Elzy High School Boys Basketball Team, after their dominating win during the 2012 championship, and now two golden trophies will be sitting in the school's trophy case in Greenwood; and

     WHEREAS, this second win was also stunning because the team had made several trips before to the state championship only to return home empty handed; and

     WHEREAS, the Panthers have been superbly coached and inspired throughout the season by Head Coach Gerald Glass, who has been ably assisted by Assistant Coaches Charles Brown, Howard Brown and Clinton Ross; and

     WHEREAS, the 2011-2012 Panthers roster is comprised of:  Gerald Glass, Jr., Demetrice McCline, Denarius Grover, Rakeem Hunt, Maurice Dunlap II, Janarius Middleton, Reginald Wright, Joshua Hayes, Vidarius Maggitt, Eddie Sims, Cartez Klines, Rahkeem Lehaman, Solomon Lewis, Alfonso Ford, Jr., and Dekarius Prayer; and

     WHEREAS, the outstanding playmanship of Senior Janarius Middleton earned him the Most Valuable Player vote during the tournament; and

     WHEREAS, it is the policy of the House of Representatives to commend athletic excellence, such as the athletic abilities displayed by the Amanda Elzy High School Boys Basketball Team, and it is with great pride that we recognize this group of student athletes and their coaches, who have brought honor to their school, their community and to their state:

     NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE STATE OF MISSISSIPPI, That we do hereby commend and congratulate the Amanda Elzy High School Boys Basketball Team and Head Coach Gerald Glass for their brilliantly played victory in the Mississippi High School Activities Association Class 4A Boys Basketball championship game, for their outstanding and extraordinary overall record of 32-5, and earning the title back-to-back champions.

     BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That copies of this resolution be furnished to Head Coach Gerald Glass, Principal Jacqueline Boyd, the Leflore County School District and to the members of the Capitol Press Corps.
