A RESOLUTION RECOGNIZING THE 25TH ANNIVERSARY OF THE NATIONAL BOARD FOR PROFESSIONAL TEACHING STANDARDS AND COMMENDING AND CONGRATULATING THE 3,420 NATIONAL BOARD CERTIFIED TEACHERS IN MISSISSIPPI, 101 OF WHICH WERE NEWLY CERTIFIED IN 2012.
WHEREAS, the National Board for Professional Teaching Standards is a nonpartisan, nonprofit organization dedicated to advancing the quality of teaching and learning by developing professional standards for accomplished teaching, creating a voluntary system to certify teachers who meet those standards, and integrating certified teachers into educational reform efforts; and
WHEREAS, since its founding 25 years ago, the National Board for Professional Teaching Standards has certified more than 100,000 teachers; and
WHEREAS, national board certification is an advanced teaching credential achieved upon completion of a voluntary and rigorous assessment program designed to recognize effective and accomplished teachers who meet high standards based on what teachers should know and be able to do; and
WHEREAS, a comprehensive study conducted by the National Research Council found that students of national board certified teachers make greater gains on achievement tests over time than students taught by teachers that are not board certified; and
WHEREAS, national board certified teachers are nationally recognized as being among the best teachers in the profession; and
WHEREAS, the State of Mississippi ranked 14th in the nation in the number of national board certified teachers in 2012 and 7th in the nation in the total number of national board certified teachers over time:
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE STATE OF MISSISSIPPI, That we do congratulate the National Board for Professional Teaching Standards on 25 years of exceptional service and commend the 3,420 national board certified teachers in Mississippi, with special recognition to the 101 teachers who received national board certification for the first time in 2012.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That copies of this resolution be forwarded to the National Board for Professional Teaching Standards and to the members of the Capitol Press Corps.
