House Concurrent Resolution 120

A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION COMMENDING AND CONGRATULATING THE BALDWYN HIGH SCHOOL BEARCATS BOYS BASKETBALL TEAM FOR WINNING THE CLASS 2A STATE CHAMPIONSHIP.

     WHEREAS, the Baldwyn High School Bearcats Boys Basketball Team, after completing a solid 2012-2013 regular season, headed into the post season determined to capture the state championship that had eluded them in 2010 and 2012, when they finished as runner-up in the Class 2A State Championship game; and

     WHEREAS, the Bearcats clawed their way through the tournament to reach the finals again, and on March 7, 2013, they got their wish not only to compete for the crown, but to do it in a match with an up-and-coming program returning to the state title game for the first time since 1960, the Bassfield High School Yellowjackets; and

     WHEREAS, Baldwyn was led by senior guard Tevin Lindsey, who was named the game's Most Valuable Player, hitting five three-pointers en route to 23 points; and

     WHEREAS, also gaining key contributions from Duke Upshaw and Martell Brown, the Bearcats cruised to the title with a 66-46 victory, finishing the season with a 32-3 overall record and winning its first state title since back-to-back championships in 1986 and 1987; and

     WHEREAS, the Bearcats have been superbly coached and inspired by Head Coach Jason McKay, Baldwyn's starting point guard in 1986 and 1987, who has broadened the players' knowledge of the game and refined their skills in execution; and

     WHEREAS, the Bearcats have developed a winning and cooperative spirit and high degree of sportsmanship, and their activities and attitude reflect great credit upon the individual players and their coaches and bring honor to Baldwyn High School; and

     WHEREAS, it is the policy of this Legislature to recognize and commend excellence, especially when evidenced by the youth of our state, such as the Baldwyn Bearcats Basketball Team who are its future:

     NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE STATE OF MISSISSIPPI, THE SENATE CONCURRING THEREIN, That we do hereby commend and congratulate the Baldwyn High School Bearcats Boys Basketball Team for winning the Class 2A State Championship, and extend best wishes for success in all of their future academic and athletic endeavors.

     BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That copies of this resolution be furnished to Baldwyn High School, Head Coach Jason McKay and to the members of the Capitol Press Corps.
