House Concurrent Resolution 27

A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION COMMENDING AND CONGRATULATING BRITTNEY REESE UPON WINNING THE GOLD MEDAL IN WOMEN'S LONG JUMP AT THE 2012 OLYMPIC SUMMER GAMES IN LONDON, ENGLAND.

     WHEREAS, in August of 2012, Brittney Reese captured the gold medal in women's long jump at the 2012 Olympic Summer Games in London, England; and

     WHEREAS, a native of Gulfport in Harrison County, Mississippi, and a former track and field star at the University of Mississippi, Brittney became only the second American woman to win the Olympic long jump title joining Jackie Joyner-Kersee who won in 1988; and

     WHEREAS, her win in London made an astounding five straight wins at world championship events beginning with the 2009 IAAF Outdoor World Championships, making her the current most dominant female track and field athlete in the world for a single event; and

     WHEREAS, Brittney dedicated the London Olympic title to the people of Mississippi and others who are still rebuilding in the wake of the deadly and devastating Hurricane Katrina in 2005; and

     WHEREAS, her goals are far from complete, and she intends to train over the next four years for the 2016 Olympic Summer Games in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, where she hopes to repeat as long jump champion; and

     WHEREAS, there is no doubt this impressive young woman will continue to achieve great success and represent her home community and state with great pride; and

     WHEREAS, it is the policy of this Legislature to recognize and commend excellence, especially when evidenced by outstanding Mississippians such as Ms. Brittney Reese:

     NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE STATE OF MISSISSIPPI, THE SENATE CONCURRING THEREIN, That we do hereby commend and congratulate Brittney Reese upon winning the gold medal in women's long jump at the 2012 Olympic Summer Games in London, England, and extend best wishes for continued success in all of her future endeavors.

     BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That copies of this resolution be furnished to Ms. Reese and to the members of the Capitol Press Corps.
