A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION COMMENDING AND CONGRATULATING DELTA CENTER STAGE IN GREENVILLE, MISSISSIPPI, FOR COMMUNITY THEATRE HONORS AT THE SOUTHEASTERN THEATRE CONFERENCE IN CHATTANOOGA, TENNESSEE.
WHEREAS, Delta Center Stage in Greenville, Mississippi, earned honors at the 2012 Southeastern Theatre Conference Community Theatre's Ten-State Regional Festival in Chattanooga, Tennessee, with its production of "For Colored Girls Who Have Considered Suicide When the Rainbow is Enuf"; and
WHEREAS, the production was named Best Play in the overall competition, and Judge Margaret Carey-McCray was named Best Director; and
WHEREAS, the cast, consisting of Cynthia Armstrong, Lucille Brown, Amber Hendricks, Jaribu Hill, Zina Kelly, Jasmine Pollard and Temika Simmons, took the Excellence in Ensemble Acting Award; and
WHEREAS, "It is such an honor to be recognized for something that you love to do," said Carey-McCray moments after the play took the Ensemble Acting Award. "The Best Ensemble Award is a tribute to all of us," she said. Carey-McCray added that it was the hard work of the cast and the behind-the-scenes work of the crew that allowed Delta Center Stage to bring home so many of the festival's top honors; and
WHEREAS, Delta Center Stage was founded in 1979 by a group of volunteers to bring live theatre back to the Delta Community. Rising from the ashes of Greenville/Leland's "Twin City Theatre Guild" which had folded seven years earlier, Delta Center Stage since its founding has produced a subscription season of plays continuously for 23 years. Until 2002, Delta Center Stage functioned entirely through the contributions of volunteers from every walk of life. On June 1, 2002, after 23 years as a volunteer organization, Delta Center Stage hired its first full-time employee, Executive Director Tim Bixler; and
WHEREAS, the production earned the right to represent Mississippi when it won the Mississippi Theatre Association Competition in January 2012. The production earned Best Play Honors at that festival; and
WHEREAS, it is with great pride that we recognize this talented company of volunteer actors and production crew which has brought honor to its community and to the State of Mississippi:
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE OF THE STATE OF MISSISSIPPI, THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES CONCURRING THEREIN, That we do hereby commend and congratulate Delta Center Stage in Greenville, Mississippi, for winning Community Theatre Honors at the 2012 Southeastern Theatre Conference in Chattanooga, Tennessee, for its production of "For Colored Girls Who Have Considered Suicide When the Rainbow is Enuf," and extend our best wishes to the actors, directors and crew on this prestigious award and for future successes.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That this resolution be presented to Executive Director Tim Bixler for the cast and crew, forwarded to the Mayor of Greenville and the Executive Director of the Mississippi Arts Commission, and made available to the Capitol Press Corps.
