A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION TO COMMEND AND CONGRATULATE MISSISSIPPI SCHOOL FOR MATHEMATICS AND SCIENCE STUDENT CHARLOTTE WANG AS A NATIONAL WINNER OF THE SIEMENS AWARD FOR ADVANCED PLACEMENT.

     WHEREAS, in 2012, the Board of Trustees of State Institutions of Higher Learning and the Siemens Foundation are celebrating 14 years of the prestigious Siemens Awards for Advanced Placement.  The Board of Trustees of State Institutions of Higher Learning is very pleased to partner with the Siemens Foundation, an organization that has stepped to the forefront of corporate responsibility by providing pioneering programs to inspire the Nation's next generation of mathematicians and scientists to succeed; and

     WHEREAS, each year, the foundation recognizes two students in each of our 50 states for excellence in AP math and science.  These talented individuals will create the solutions we need for a better world and a more vibrant economy.  The foundation has announced this year's female winner, Charlotte Wang, an honors student at the Mississippi School for Mathematics and Science in Columbus, Mississippi; and

     WHEREAS, the scholarship award is given to the male and female student earning the greatest number of scores of 5, on the AP scale of 1 to 5, on the following AP Exams:  Biology, Calculus BC, Chemistry, Computer Science AB, Environmental Science, Physics C: Electricity and Magnetism, Physics C: Mechanics, and Statistics.  Students must obtain a score of 5 on at least two of these exams to qualify; and

     WHEREAS, these outstanding award winners are recognized nationally in USA Today and other media outlets; and

     WHEREAS, it is with great pride that we join the Siemens Foundation in congratulating this Mississippi student recipient of the prestigious Siemens Award for Advanced Placement.  Our Nation's ability to remain competitive in the global marketplace demands that we foster continued excellence in the next generation of scientists, engineers, doctors and mathematicians.  The Siemens Awards for Advanced Placement are one way to encourage students, teachers and schools to engage in high-quality, rigorous science and mathematics education:

     NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE OF THE STATE OF MISSISSIPPI, THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES CONCURRING THEREIN, That we do hereby commend and congratulate Mississippi School for Mathematics and Science student Charlotte Wang as a national winner of the Siemens Award for Advanced Placement.

     BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That this resolution be presented to Charlotte Wang, be furnished to the Board of Trustees of State Institutions of Higher Learning and the Siemens Foundation, and be made available to the Capitol Press Corps.
