Senate Concurrent Resolution 613

A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION COMMENDING AND CONGRATULATING THE COLDWATER HIGH SCHOOL "COUGARS" BOYS BASKETBALL TEAM AND HEAD COACH WERT SPIVA FOR WINNING THE MHSAA CLASS 1A STATE CHAMPIONSHIP.

WHEREAS, Center/Forward Jakevin Farmer scored 15 points, had 22 rebounds and blocked 7 shots in Coldwater High School's (68-55) victory over Biggersville in the Class 1A State Championship Game, giving the school from North Mississippi its second title in four years; and

WHEREAS, this victory gave Jakevin Farmer, a 6'3", 175-pound rangy forward, an opportunity to shine on the grandest of stages, under Mississippi Coliseum's bright lights. He won the MVP by dominating from the start; and

WHEREAS, the Cougars (27-6) won the second title to go with the 2009 Crown, giving Coach Wert Spiva a fifth Championship. Spiva coaches the school's boys and girls teams. He has three Girls State Titles; and

WHEREAS, Coldwater's Marcel Hunt, one of four Cougars to score in double figures, made a layup and then moments later hit two free throws with 1:07 left to secure the win. With 45 seconds left, Biggersville, down by eight, missed a 3-pointer and Farmer grabbed the rebound and wrestled the ball away from two defenders; and

WHEREAS, when the final horn sounded, the blue-clad Coldwater crowd roared and the players rushed to mid-court, piling on each other in celebration of a State Title; and

WHEREAS, the 2011-2012 Coldwater High School Cougars Boys Basketball Team Roster is: Chris Vortis, SG/PG; Jordan Sipp, SF/PF; Jamie Rubin, G/F; Marcel Newson, PG/G; Devin Leverson, F/G; Marcel Hunt, (C)/SF/G; Devonta Roberts, SF/W; Davion Merritt, SG/SF; Brian Davis, PG; Devonte Newson, PG; Montel Sandridge, F/G; Cortel Sandridge, PF/F; Jordan Robinson, PG; Jakevin Farmer, (C)/C/F; Deadrick Callicut, C/PF; Keifer Pitts, G; Michael Geter, G; Head Coach Wert Spiva; Assistant Coach Michael Cathey, Jr., and Managers D'Anthony Conley, Jamarcus Callicutt, Chardon Hayes, Cody Sipp and Byron Burnett; and

WHEREAS, it is with pride that we recognize this group of student athletes from North Mississippi who have brought honor to their school, their community and to the State of Mississippi:

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE OF THE STATE OF MISSISSIPPI, THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES CONCURRING THEREIN, That we do hereby commend and congratulate the Coldwater High School "Cougars" Boys Basketball Team and Head Coach Wert Spiva for winning the Mississippi High School Activities Association Class 1A State Championship and extend our best wishes to the team, coaches, parents and sponsors for future academic and athletic success.

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That this resolution be presented to Coach Spiva and Coldwater Principal Willie Brandon, Jr., forwarded to the Tate County Board of Education, and made available to the Capitol Press Corps.
