Senate Concurrent Resolution 548

(As Adopted by Senate and House)

A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION MOURNING THE LOSS AND COMMENDING THE PUBLIC SERVICE OF FORMER KEMPER COUNTY SUPERINTENDENT OF EDUCATION JUNE WRIGHT OF PRESTON, MISSISSIPPI, AND EXPRESSING THE SYMPATHY OF THE LEGISLATURE.

WHEREAS, June Wright was never more visible while serving as Superintendent of Education in Kemper County than during basketball season, when she perched a chair on the floor at the corner of the court to cheer on the Wildcats, sometimes even voicing displeasure if a referee made a call against her team.  She took that same mentality to work each day, however, being remembered by many as one who fought tirelessly for "her" children; and

WHEREAS, June Wright, 55, passed away January 12, 2012; and

WHEREAS, a lifelong educator, Wright was the leader of the Kemper County School District from 2004-2007.  She also taught in Noxubee County.  In recent years, she worked for the Choctaw Tribal Schools and Mississippi Band of Choctaw Indians and was working as a Speech Therapist with the Clay County School District at the time of her death; and

WHEREAS, Kevin Jones, a longtime Superintendent in the Noxubee County School System, who was once the Principal at Kemper County High School, said Wright's passion for children was unmatched.  "She was a champion for Special Ed, Speech and gifted children."  Her enthusiasm in her career was rare, and she was best remembered by those in Kemper County for her personal interaction with students and support of the district's athletic programs; and

WHEREAS, a lifelong resident of the Preston Community, Wright was preceded in death by her parents, Virgil and Ercelle Wright.  Survivors include her brother, Dee Luke Wright; sisters:  Faye Wilson, Mae Brewer and Jo Pigott; two nieces; four nephews; and a number of cousins; and

WHEREAS, it is with sadness that we note the passing of this respected educator:

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE OF THE STATE OF MISSISSIPPI, THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES CONCURRING THEREIN, That we do hereby mourn the loss and commend the public service of former Kemper County Superintendent of Education June Wright of Preston, Mississippi, and express the sympathy of the Legislature to her surviving family on her passing.

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That this resolution be presented to the surviving family of Miss Wright, forwarded to the Kemper County Board of Education, and made available to the Capitol Press Corps.
