A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION COMMENDING AND CONGRATULATING THE PICAYUNE HIGH SCHOOL "MAROON TIDE" FOOTBALL TEAM AND VETERAN HEAD COACH DODD LEE FOR WINNING THE MHSAA CLASS 5A STATE CHAMPIONSHIP.
WHEREAS, the Picayune High School "Maroon Tide" Football Team won 13 games for the first time ever in a football season on December 2, 2011, and the final win was the most historic. The Maroon Tide scored 21 unanswered points in the final period, and defeated Starkville High School Yellow Jackets 38-21 in the MHSAA Class 5A State Championship game at Mississippi Veterans Memorial Stadium before a crowd of 8,500; and
WHEREAS, "I told the team before the game that someone would make history tonight," veteran Picayune Head Coach Dodd Lee, whose team finished 13-2, said. "I'm just glad we were on the right side of it. Our players are competitors, and they knew what was at stake," Lee added. "I thought we would finally find something that we could do to move the ball on them there in the fourth period. We won that quarter and won the game"; and
WHEREAS, the Maroon Tide began the fourth period behind 21-17, after Starkville dominated the third period and overcame a 17-6 half-time deficit thanks to a pair of scoring runs by quarterback Gabe Myles. But the Maroon Tide dominated the fourth period, just like they had done most of the first half, and pulled out their first State Championship since 1986; and
WHEREAS, Picayune amassed 459 yards of total offense with 314 rushing yards on 63 carries. Dereonte Magee had 133 yards on 25 carries. Jordan Dedeaux finished with 88 yards on 12 rushes and Desmond Taylor had 75 yards on 13 carries. Ben Hickman completed 4 of 8 passes for 145 yards. Quarterback Myles had 165 yards on 23 rushes and completed 6 of 22 passes for 52 yards for 217 of Starkville's 275 total yards; and

WHEREAS, it is with great pride that we recognize the achievement of this team of student athletes who have brought honor to their school, their community and to the State of Mississippi:
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE OF THE STATE OF MISSISSIPPI, THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES CONCURRING THEREIN, That we do hereby commend and congratulate the Picayune High School "Maroon Tide" Football Team and veteran Head Coach Dodd Lee for winning the Mississippi High School Activities Association Class 5A State Championship and extend our best wishes to the team, coaches, parents and sponsors for future athletic and academic success.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That this resolution be presented to Coach Dodd, Picayune Principal Kent Kirkland, forwarded to the Picayune School Board and made available to the Capitol Press Corps.
