Senate Concurrent Resolution 507

A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION COMMENDING THE RECORD OF PUBLIC SERVICE AND THANKING STATE BANKING COMMISSIONER JOHN ALLISON ON THE OCCASION OF HIS RETIREMENT.

     WHEREAS, after 40 years with the Mississippi Department of Banking and Consumer Finance, State Banking Commissioner John Allison has announced his retirement effective September 30, 2011; and

     WHEREAS, an Olive Branch native and decorated Army Veteran, John Allison began his career with the department as a Bank Examiner in February 1972.  He served in various positions before being named to the top post; and

     WHEREAS, in addition to overseeing state chartered banks, Allison was responsible for monitoring state chartered credit unions, consumer-loan brokers, mortgage lenders, pawnshops and other financial institutions; and

     WHEREAS, Charles Elliot, President and CEO of the Mississippi Credit Union Association, said Allison has been an effective and professional regulator.  "John was very thorough and fair in his supervision and regulation of credit unions, and while we hate to see him leave, his retirement is well deserved"; and

     WHEREAS, John Allison is a graduate of the University of Mississippi and the Graduate School of Banking of the South at Louisiana State University; and

     WHEREAS, he has been involved in several professional organizations, such as the Conference of State Bank Supervisors, an association of state officials responsible for chartering, supervising and regulating banks.  He served as the organization's Chairman in 2005.  Allison also served on the State Liaison Committee of the Federal Financial Institutions Examination Council, which helped prepare financial institutions for catastrophic events like Hurricane Katrina; and

     WHEREAS, John's professional accomplishments and remarkable intellect have enriched the lives of his colleagues and it is with great pride that we recognize the career of this respected public servant:

     NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE OF THE STATE OF MISSISSIPPI, THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES CONCURRING THEREIN, That State Banking Commissioner John Allison has been a wonderful example of public service, and we commend his record of achievement and his legacy of leadership and dedication to all Mississippians on the occasion of his retirement and extend our best wishes and thanks to John and his wife, Jan.

     BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That this resolution be presented to John Allison and his family, forwarded to the Governor and made available to the Capitol Press Corps.
