A RESOLUTION COMMENDING AND CONGRATULATING THE COLDWATER HIGH SCHOOL COUGARS BOYS BASKETBALL TEAM AND HEAD COACH WERT SPIVA, JR., FOR WINNING THE MISSISSIPPI HIGH SCHOOL ACTIVITIES ASSOCIATION CLASS 1A STATE CHAMPIONSHIP.

WHEREAS, Jakevin Farmer scored 15 points, had 22 rebounds and blocked 7 shots in Coldwater High School's 68-55 victory over Biggersville in the Class 1A State Championship Game, giving the school from North Mississippi its second title in four years; and

WHEREAS, this victory gave Jakevin Farmer, a rangy center-forward, an opportunity to shine on the grandest of stages, under the Mississippi Coliseum's bright lights, winning the Most Valuable Player by dominating from the start; and

WHEREAS, the Cougars (27-6) won their second title to go with the 2009 crown, giving Coach Wert Spiva, Jr., who coaches the school's boys and girls teams and has three girls state titles, a fifth championship; and

WHEREAS, Coldwater's Marcel Hunt, one of four Cougars to score in double figures, made a layup and then moments later hit two free throws with 1:07 left to secure the win; and with 45 seconds left, Biggersville, down by eight, missed a 3-pointer and Farmer grabbed the rebound and wrestled the ball away from two defenders; and

WHEREAS, when the final horn sounded, the blue-clad Coldwater crowd roared and the players rushed to midcourt, piling on each other in celebration of a state title; and

WHEREAS, the 2011-2012 Coldwater High School Cougars Boys Basketball Team roster is: Chris Vortis, Sr./G; Jordan Sipp, Sr./F; Jamie Rubin, Jr./G; Marcel Newson, Jr./G; Devin Leverson, Sr./F; Marcel Hunt, Jr./F; Devonta Roberts, Soph./F; Davion Merritt, Jr./G; Brian Davis, Jr./PG; Devonte Newson, Soph./PG; Montel Sandridge, Sr./F-G; Cortel Sandridge, Jr./F; Jordan Robinson, Soph./PG; Michael Geter, Jr./G; Jakevin Farmer, Sr./C-F; Deadrick Callicut, Jr./F-C; Head Coach Wert Spiva, Jr.,; Assistant Coach Michael Cathey, Jr., and Managers D'Anthony Conley, Jamarcus Callicutt and Chardon Hayes; and

WHEREAS, it is the policy of the House of Representatives to recognize outstanding student athletes such as these students from North Mississippi who have brought honor to their school, their community and to the State of Mississippi:

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE STATE OF MISSISSIPPI, That we do hereby commend and congratulate the Coldwater High School Cougars Boys Basketball Team and Head Coach Wert Spiva, Jr., for winning the Mississippi High School Activities Association Class 1A State Championship and extend best wishes to the team and coaches for continued success in all of their future academic and athletic endeavors.

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That copies of this resolution be furnished to Coach Spiva, Coldwater Principal Willie Brandon, the Tate County School District and to the members of the Capitol Press Corps.
