A RESOLUTION COMMENDING THE ESTEEMED CAREER AND COMMUNITY SERVICE OF MR. JACK RHEA TANNEHILL AND CONGRATULATING HIM UPON THE OCCASION OF HIS RETIREMENT FROM THE NEWSPAPER BUSINESS AS OWNER AND PUBLISHER OF THE UNION APPEAL AND THE NEWTON COUNTY APPEAL NEWSPAPERS.

     WHEREAS, Mr. Jack Rhea Tannehill, editor and publisher of The Union Appeal and The Newton County Appeal, has decided to silence his printing presses upon having made the decision to retire after editing and publishing local news for 2,204 weeks since his start in the newspaper industry in August of 1968; and

     WHEREAS, a native of Winnfield, Louisiana, Mr. Tannehill grew up in Philadelphia, Mississippi, and is a 1968 graduate of the University of Mississippi and a 1969 graduate of the Mississippi National Guard Officer Candidate School; and

     WHEREAS, in continuing the family dynasty of providing print media, Mr. Tannehill learned the newspaper business from his well-versed parents:  father, Jack Long Tannehill, who was an editor and publisher at newspapers in Louisiana and Mississippi, and a member of the Mississippi Press Association Hall of Fame; and mother, Courtney Tannehill, a newspaper woman, teacher, artist and librarian; and

     WHEREAS, during his 44-year career, Mr. Tannehill was the recipient of dozens of awards for his thorough and informed methodology of writing and reporting editorial commentary and photography; and

     WHEREAS, following in his parents' footsteps, Mr. Tannehill, the former owner and publisher of The Clarke County Tribune, has been active in the newspaper industry, having served on the board of directors for the Mississippi Press Association as the association's president in 1982; and

     WHEREAS, Mr. Tannehill has been an active member of his community, serving on several committees and boards, including:  Laird Hospital Board of Directors; Union Chamber of Commerce; Union Jaycees, serving as president; Union High School Athletic Boosters, serving as president; and First Presbyterian Church of Union; and

     WHEREAS, before and throughout the length of his spectacular career, Mr. Tannehill has been privileged to experience the blissfulness of love, support and encouragement from his wife, Judy, their son, Rhea, daughter-in-law, Robyn, and their three grandchildren, Maggie, Jack, III, and Molly Catherine; and

     WHEREAS, it is the policy of the House of Representatives to commend the dedicated career and community service of such a remarkable individual as Mr. Tannehill, whose career and service should be the benchmark of excellence by which all citizens of this great state should strive to attain their personal success:

     NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE STATE OF MISSISSIPPI, That we do hereby commend the esteemed career and community service of Mr. Jack Rhea Tannehill and congratulate him upon the occasion of his retirement from the newspaper business, and extend warmest wishes for continued success in all of his future endeavors and for good health, happiness and peace of mind in the later years of his life.

     BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That copies of this resolution be furnished to Mr. Jack Rhea Tannehill and to the members of the Capitol Press Corps.
