A RESOLUTION RECOGNIZING THE THIRD TUESDAY IN MARCH AS "HOME EDUCATION DAY" IN THE STATE OF MISSISSIPPI AND ENCOURAGING ITS CITIZENS TO ACKNOWLEDGE ITS OBSERVANCE.

     WHEREAS, the members of the House of Representatives of the State of Mississippi are dedicated to excellence in education as demonstrated by the belief that parental choice and involvement are crucial to excellence in education, and that it is the fundamental responsibility and right of the parents to ensure the best quality education for their children; and

     WHEREAS, home education has been a major part of the American education system since the birth of our nation and demonstrates the American ideals of liberty, innovation and individual responsibility; and

     WHEREAS, many notable and respected American statesmen and leaders were educated in their homes, including:  George Washington, Patrick Henry, John Quincy Adams, John Marshall, Robert E. Lee, Booker T. Washington, Thomas Edison, Abraham Lincoln, Theodore Roosevelt, Woodrow Wilson, Mark Twain and Andrew Carnegie; and

     WHEREAS, the students of home education continue to excel in academic achievements and pursuits and have consistently performed well above the national average on standardized achievement tests and Mississippi's home educated students are representative of that very fact as they have continually exhibited high standards of academic accomplishments and citizenship; and

     WHEREAS, it is the policy of the House of Representatives to recognize the outstanding achievements of our children, such as the successes of home educated students, who are the future of this state:

     NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE STATE OF MISSISSIPPI, That we do hereby recognize the third Tuesday in March as "Home Education Day" in the State of Mississippi, encourage the state's citizens to acknowledge observance thereof, and we commend the parents that are committed to the independent enrichment in the lives of their children.

     BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That copies of this resolution be furnished to the Mississippi Home Educators Association and to the members of the Capitol Press Corps.
