A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION RECOGNIZING AND COMMENDING MR. HAVIS HURLEY FOR HIS UNYIELDING DEDICATION TO THE CHILDREN OF MISSISSIPPI.

     WHEREAS, Mr. Havis Hurley of Corinth, Mississippi, has dedicated much of his life and a substantial amount of his time to bettering the lives of countless children, and he has been touched and honored to be a part of the lives of so many young people; and

     WHEREAS, on March 31, 2012, amid tears and applause, the ever-humble Mr. Hurley accepted the Junior Auxiliary of Corinth's 2012 Outstanding Citizen award before family and friends at the organization's 50th Golden Gala Charity Ball at the Shiloh Golf and Athletic Club; and

     WHEREAS, Mr. Hurley is a longtime youth coach and mentor to the youth of Corinth and Alcorn County, and he served as the director of the SportsPlex from 1987 to 2006 and currently transports approximately 18 special needs children to school each day for the Corinth School District; and

     WHEREAS, prior to moving home to Corinth, Mr. Hurley worked with the Boys Club of Ft. Lauderdale, Florida, and while he worked with those youth, he took a group of youngsters to Disney World in October 1971 and fell in love with taking kids to the magical park; and

     WHEREAS, after he accepted the job in Corinth as the SportsPlex director, Mr. Hurley took a group to Disney World in 1989, and since that time, he has taken groups from the Boys and Girls Club, Project Attention, SportsPlex and numerous other agencies and organizations; and

     WHEREAS, Mr. Hurley plans to bring a busload of special needs children and their chaperones to Disney World in June, and he happily admits that these children have inspired him through their courage and positive attitudes amidst the challenges they each face daily; and

     WHEREAS, with such a huge heart and desire to give back to his community and the children of his community, it is no surprise that Mr. Hurley was selected as the 2012 Outstanding Citizen, his friends remarking that, "In all endeavors, Havis goes over and beyond what is asked of him.  There is truly no one more deserving than he for this recognition."; and

     WHEREAS, it is clear that the legacy of Mr. Hurley will always be his genuine dedication to serving children, his love for community, the unselfish giving of his time and his sharing of values; and

     WHEREAS, the humbleness and selflessness that Mr. Hurley continuously displays is manifested in his unique ability to make the children that he encounters feel important by giving and committing his time, energy and money into serving others with a good and sincere attitude; and

     WHEREAS, it is the policy of this Legislature to commend the most selfless citizens who constantly strive to improve the lives of others and to make others happy, such as Mr. Hurley, especially when their actions so graciously touch the lives of the children of this great state, who are its future:

     NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE STATE OF MISSISSIPPI, THE SENATE CONCURRING THEREIN, That we do hereby recognize and commend Mr. Havis Hurley for his relentless dedication to the children of Mississippi and extend our sincerest gratitude for his humble, selfless and gracious devotion to his fellow man.

     BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That copies of this resolution be furnished to Mr. Hurley and to the members of the Capitol Press Corps.
