House Concurrent Resolution 91

(As Adopted by House)

A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION CONGRATULATING AND HONORING THOMAS PATTEN OF POPLARVILLE, MISSISSIPPI, UPON BEING NAMED AS A DISTINGUISHED FINALIST AMONG THE 2012 TOP YOUTH VOLUNTEERS IN MISSISSIPPI.

WHEREAS, Thomas Patten, an esteemed resident of Poplarville, Mississippi, and a student at Poplarville High School, has achieved national recognition for exemplary volunteer service by being named a Distinguished Finalist in the 17th Annual - 2012 Prudential Spirit of Community Awards; and

WHEREAS, this prestigious award, presented by Prudential Financial in partnership with the National Association of Secondary School Principals, honors young volunteers across America who have demonstrated an extraordinary commitment to serving their communities; and

WHEREAS, Thomas earned this award by supporting foster children through his annual drive, "Luggage for Little Ones," which collects pieces of luggage to give to foster children so their belongings may be packed in a piece of luggage, rather than trash bags, when they are transferred to a new home; and

WHEREAS, in his most recent "Luggage for Little Ones" drive, Thomas managed to collect over 220 pieces of luggage in support of his cause, and he was helped by a group of volunteer recruits, who assisted him by posting flyers around town and by placing collection bins in local stores to receive the luggage; and

WHEREAS, students of Thomas' caliber represent the best of America's youth, who are role models to their peers and their communities, and are sought by Prudential to encourage other young people, our future leaders and all Americans to respect and honor the value and importance of volunteering in their communities; and

WHEREAS, the success of the State of Mississippi, the strength of our communities, and the overall vitality of American society depend, in great measure, upon the dedication of young people, such as Thomas, who use their considerable talents and resources to serve others:

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE STATE OF MISSISSIPPI, THE SENATE CONCURRING THEREIN, That we do hereby congratulate and honor Thomas Patten as a Distinguished Finalist in the 17th Annual - 2012 Prudential Spirit of Community Awards, recognizing his outstanding record of volunteer service, peer leadership and community spirit, and extend best wishes for his continued success and happiness in all of his future endeavors.

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That copies of this resolution be furnished to Thomas Patten and to the members of the Capitol Press Corps.
