Senate Resolution 19

(As Adopted by Senate)

A RESOLUTION TO COMMEND SENATOR J. WALTER MICHEL III FOR HIS DISTINGUISHED SERVICE IN THE MISSISSIPPI SENATE.

     WHEREAS, Senator Walter Michel has announced that he will not be seeking reelection, which he characterizes as a "self-imposed term limit."  He has represented Senate District 25 which covers portions of Madison and Hinds Counties.  In Walter Michel, the citizens of District 25 have had effective representation from a dedicated public servant with commercial real estate management and business experience; and

     WHEREAS, Senator Michel served in the Mississippi House of Representatives in 1992.  He then joined the Mississippi State Senate in 1999; and

     WHEREAS, his committee assignments include the following:  Chairman of Economic Development; Vice Chairman of Business and Financial Institutions; Vice Chairman of Executive Contingent Fund; Congressional Redistricting; Finance; Forestry; Judiciary, Division A; Labor, Legislative Reapportionment; Municipalities; and Public Property; and

     WHEREAS, Senator Michel is a member of the Rotary Club, BIPEC, the Mississippi Association of Realtors, American Legislative Exchange Council, Mississippi Wildlife Federation, Mississippi Forestry Association and the National Rifle Association.  Senator Michel is a lifelong resident of Jackson; and

     WHEREAS, J. Walter Michel III, grandson of the founder of J. Walter Michel Commercial Real Estate Agency, received a degree in Real Estate from the University of Mississippi in 1983, and, subsequently joined the firm.  While a freshman at Ole Miss, the School of Business started a Real Estate Program and Walter was the first student to declare Real Estate as a major at the University.  At the age of 27, Walter received his CCIM designation and now concentrates on development and real estate investments; and

     WHEREAS, Senator Michel's key legislative interest included sponsorship of the "tax holiday" legislation which encourages parents to purchase school clothing and supplies tax free, and as an avid outdoorsman he was active in hunting and fishing regulation; and

     WHEREAS, Senator Michel's service has been marked by his commitment to success and recognized leadership, sound judgment and fairness.  He has set the highest standard in all of his many roles, businessman, statesman, community leader and leader in the Mississippi Senate and as a true friend:

     NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE OF THE STATE OF MISSISSIPPI, That we do hereby commend and recognize Senator Walter Michel, whose outstanding service enriched everyone with whom he was associated, and we wish Walter much success in his future endeavors.

     BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That this resolution be presented to Senator Michel and made available to the Capitol Press Corps.
