A RESOLUTION RECOGNIZING AND COMMENDING GULFPORT HIGH SCHOOL STAR SOCCER PLAYER MORGAN WESSON UPON HER RECEIPT OF THE 2011 MHSAA LINDY CALLAHAN SCHOLAR-ATHLETE AWARD.

     WHEREAS, the 16th Annual Mississippi High School Activities Association Lindy Callahan Scholar-Athlete Award ceremony was held on March 23, 2011, which featured Gulfport High School five-year soccer letter Morgan Wesson; and

     WHEREAS, Morgan has a 4.0 GPA at Gulfport High School, is ranked 1st in her Class of 318 and has an ACT score of 31; and

     WHEREAS, she has earned the following athletic achievements:  earned five letters in soccer, three in volleyball and one each in fast-pitch softball, cross country, and track and field; Team Captain and Mississippi Association of Coaches (MAC) Soccer All-Star in 2011; three-time All-Division pick; offensive MVP as a junior; led team in assists as a senior; two-time Team Captain in volleyball and Gulfport's MVP as a senior; and finished 53rd in Class 5A Cross Country Meet as a sophomore; and

     WHEREAS, Morgan has received the following accomplishments and accolades at her school and community:  Student Council (four years); National Honor Society (Secretary); Key Club (Secretary); Beta Club (Secretary); Mu Alpha Theta; People to People Ambassador nominee; Girls State nominee; Hugh O'Brien Youth Leadership participant; National Society of High School Scholars; National Youth Leadership Forum on Medicine; Thrive Africa Mission Trip;  Fellowship of Christian Athletes (FCA); Christian Outreach Club; March of Dimes Youth Leadership; Relay for Life; Feed My Sheep (serving the homeless and needy in the Gulfport area); and Salvation Army.  Morgan plans to attend Auburn University; and

     WHEREAS, "I can honestly say Gulfport High School is a better place because of Morgan's presence.  Morgan brings out the best in people because of the positive energy that she exudes.  She is mature beyond her years:  outgoing, honest, smart, positive, compassionate and diligent," stated Alice Walker, Counselor at Gulfport High School; and

     WHEREAS, it is with great pride that we salute this student-athlete who is the "best of the best" and has brought honor to her school, her community and to the State of Mississippi:

     NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE OF THE STATE OF MISSISSIPPI, That we do hereby recognize and commend Gulfport High School Star Soccer Player Morgan Wesson upon her receipt of the 2011 Mississippi High School Activities Association Lindy Callahan Scholar-Athlete Award, and extend to Morgan, her coaches, and her family our best wishes on this auspicious occasion.

     BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That this resolution be presented to Morgan Wesson and her family, forwarded to the Principal of Gulfport High School and made available to the Capitol Press Corps.
