Senate Concurrent Resolution 658

A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION SALUTING THE MISSISSIPPI ARMY NATIONAL GUARD 287TH ENGINEER COMPANY OF LUCEDALE, MISSISSIPPI, UPON ITS RETURN HOME FROM TOUR OF DUTY IN AFGHANISTAN.

WHEREAS, the Mississippi Army National Guard 287th Engineer Company of Lucedale, Mississippi, was called for active service to our country in Afghanistan; and

WHEREAS, the 287th Engineer Company marched into the Lucedale City Park on March 12, 2011, for a homecoming celebration after a tour that included a 10-month deployment in Afghanistan.  The 130-member unit cleared improvised explosive devices and other bombs from roadways in Afghanistan's eastern province, Paktika; and

WHEREAS, "The homecoming, called 'Hog Wild' because of a donated 300-pound whole hog, was attended by about 1,200 people," said Lucedale Mayor Doug Lee.  Captain Marty Davis, the unit's commander, praised the soldiers' performance "in one of the most dangerous regions on the planet.  I've never been prouder.  I've never been more proud of my country, my state, my soldiers," Davis said; and

WHEREAS, this unit's willingness to give freely and unselfishly of themselves in defense of our democratic principles has given our country the security we enjoy today.  From Valley Forge to Iraq and Afghanistan, through war and peace, these patriotic Americans have answered the call, serving with honor and fidelity; and

WHEREAS, the State of Mississippi, the City of Lucedale, Mississippi, and the residents of George and Greene Counties are justifiably proud of these men and women who have served the people of this state and their community; and

WHEREAS, we thank God for their safe return home to their families:

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE OF THE STATE OF MISSISSIPPI, THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES CONCURRING THEREIN, That we do hereby salute the Mississippi Army National Guard 287th Engineer Company of Lucedale, Mississippi, upon its return home from tour of duty in Afghanistan and extend the thanks of a grateful state to these guardians of civilization.

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That this resolution be presented to the Commanding Officer of the 287th Engineer Company, forwarded to the Mississippi Adjutant General, and made available to the members of the Capitol Press Corps.
