A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION COMMENDING AND CONGRATULATING THE ST. STANISLAUS "ROCK-A-CHAWS" BOYS BASKETBALL TEAM AND HEAD COACH JAY LADNER FOR WINNING ITS FIRST STATE BASKETBALL CHAMPIONSHIP IN SCHOOL HISTORY.
WHEREAS, St. Stanislaus High School entered the season as a heavy favorite to win the Class 4A State Basketball Championship. The Rock-A-Chaws lived up to those expectations, defeating Pass Christian 54-38 in the Mississippi High School Activities Association Class 4A Finals on March 4, 2011, at the Mississippi Coliseum; and
WHEREAS, forward Johnny Zuppardo scored 21 points, grabbed 10 rebounds and blocked four shots as the Rock-A-Chaws (34-2) won their first title in basketball. St. Stanislaus also won all five games against the Pirates this season; and
WHEREAS, "The players deserve all of the credit. This team had a lot of good players," Coach Jay Ladner said; and
WHEREAS, six-foot-eight Johnny Zuppardo was named the game's Most Valuable Player. St. Stanislaus took a 14-10 first-quarter lead as Zuppardo and Daniel Grieves each had five points. Davon Hayes added four. The Rock-A-Chaws' inside game wore down Pass Christian in the third quarter, opening the second half with a 11-2 run to grab a 33-24 lead. Zuppardo had six of those points. The Rock-A-Chaws led 38-28 after three quarters, out scoring Pass Christian 16-6 in the period; and
WHEREAS, Davon Hayes had a strong game for the Rock-A-Chaws, finishing with 16 points. "When I came to St. Stanislaus, I promised Coach Ladner three things: We would win a Division 8, Class 4A Title; we would win a South State Title; and we would win a State Title. We delivered all three of them"; and
WHEREAS, the Rock-A-Chaws Championship Roster is as follows: Will Nations, Malcolm Reid, Davon Hayes, Ramone Tate, Bret Reinhart, Nick Vazquez, Robert Dolese, Jackson Grieves, Miles Burnett, Ryan Jordan, Will Reid, Heath Corr, Bennett Rimmer, Clint Vancourt, Daniel Grieves, Johnny Zuppardo, Gatlin Fay and Riley Baggett; Head Coach Jay Ladner; and
WHEREAS, it is with great pride that we salute the first State Championship earned by a group of student athletes who have brought honor to their school, their community and to the State of Mississippi:
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE OF THE STATE OF MISSISSIPPI, THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES CONCURRING THEREIN, That we do hereby commend and congratulate the St. Stanislaus "Rock-A-Chaws" Boys Basketball Team and Head Coach Jay Ladner for winning the Mississippi High School Activities Association Class 4A State Championship, the first State Title in school history, and extend our best wishes to the team, coaches, parents and sponsors on this auspicious occasion and for future successes.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That this resolution be presented to Coach Jay Ladner and Principal Ronald Hingle, and made available to the Capitol Press Corps.
