A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION RECOGNIZING AND CONGRATULATING FORMER MILITARY TRANSITION TEAM COMMANDER MAURIO SMITH OF BROOKHAVEN, MISSISSIPPI, FOR RECEIVING CIVILIAN JOB NEWS' "TOP 40 UNDER 40 MILITARY" AWARD.
WHEREAS, each November in honor of Veterans Day, Civilian Job News, the worldwide military base newspaper, releases its Top 40 Under 40 Military edition, which endeavors to recognize the top service members who are serving or have served in the United States Armed Forces; and
WHEREAS, former Brookhaven resident, Maurio Smith, has been named to the prestigious 2010 list; and
WHEREAS, Smith, 30, who now lives in Louisville, Kentucky, is a 1998 graduate of Brookhaven High School and a 2003 graduate of the United States Military Academy at West Point. He is married to fellow Brookhaven native, Latoya Wilcher Smith, and is the son of Kathleen Smith and Semmie Smith, both of Brookhaven; and
WHEREAS, as Military Transition Team Commander, Maurio Smith trained an Iraqi Army Regiment of 638 soldiers to replace United States forces. By the end of his tour, the Iraqi regiment operated without United States support. He is a process manager at Humana today. His colleagues say Smith was the "go-to guy" in Mosul, as well as "a very compassionate, hands-on guy"; and
WHEREAS, the criteria for consideration are as follows:
· Serving or has served in the United States Armed Forces;
· Under 40 years old;
· Exemplary military performance as per their assignments and evaluations;
· Honorable discharge.
A committee selects the finalists and winners from the nominating pools. Finalists are asked to submit additional biographical information to the committee for consideration. "Top 40 Under 40 Military" comes from all ranks and backgrounds. They have gone from patriotic military service to practicing business. These people have a drive and determination that is certain to take them far in life. Civilian Job News is a tool to help military-experienced personnel find a civilian job after their term of service; and
WHEREAS, it is with great pride that we recognize this Mississippi citizen who as an active duty officer brought honor to his family, his home community and to the State of Mississippi: NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE OF THE STATE OF MISSISSIPPI, THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES CONCURRING THEREIN, That we do hereby recognize and congratulate former Military Transition Team Commander Maurio Smith of Brookhaven, Mississippi, for receiving the Civilian Job News' "Top 40 Under 40 Military" Award and extend our best wishes to Maurio and his family for this military honor.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That this resolution be presented to Maurio Smith and made available to the Capitol Press Corps.
