Senate Concurrent Resolution 526

A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION COMMENDING AND CONGRATULATING FORMER UNITED STATES SENATOR TRENT LOTT OF PASCAGOULA, MISSISSIPPI, UPON HIS INDUCTION INTO THE UNIVERSITY OF MISSISSIPPI ALUMNI ASSOCIATION 2010 HALL OF FAME.

     WHEREAS, the University of Mississippi Alumni Association has honored seven alumni with its highest annual recognition during Homecoming weekend November 5-6, 2010.  Inductees into the 2010 Alumni Hall of Fame include former Mississippi Congressman and Senator Trent Lott of Washington, D.C., for service to the university and the Alumni Association; and

     WHEREAS, after graduating from the University of Mississippi School of Law in 1967, Senator Lott returned to his hometown of Pascagoula, Mississippi to practice law.  A year later, he went to Washington to work for U.S. Representative William M. Colmer.  In 1972, he was elected to the U.S. House of Representatives, where he served eight of 16 years as the Republican Whip.  In 1988, he was elected to the U.S. Senate, where he was twice elected Republican Whip.  Lott is the only person to be Republican Whip in both houses of Congress; and

     WHEREAS, in 1999 Senator Lott helped raise funds to create the University of Mississippi Lott Leadership Institute, an accredited degree-granting program in leadership and public policy that promotes leadership skills in high school and college students; and

     WHEREAS, after retiring from the Senate in 2007, he and former Senator John Breaux (D.La.) founded the Breaux Lott Leadership Group, a strategic consulting and lobbying firm combining nearly 70 years of congressional experience from two parties; and

     WHEREAS, as a University of Mississippi student, Lott was president of Sigma Nu fraternity and a Rebel cheerleader.  He and his wife, Patricia, have two children and four grandchildren; and

     WHEREAS, the purpose of the University of Mississippi Alumni Association Hall of Fame is to honor those select alumni who have made an outstanding contribution to their Country, State, or the University of Mississippi through their good deeds, services or contributions, all of which have perpetuated the good name of the University.  The persons selected as members of the Hall of Fame are presented and honored at the Homecoming Ceremonies on the campus at the University of Mississippi each year; and

     WHEREAS, it is with great pride that we join the graduates of the University of Mississippi and the citizens of our state in recognizing the public, charitable and business contributions of this outstanding Mississippi public official who has brought honor to his university, the Mississippi Gulf Coast Community and to the State of Mississippi:

     NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE OF THE STATE OF MISSISSIPPI, THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES CONCURRING THEREIN, That we do hereby commend and congratulate former Mississippi United States Senator Trent Lott of Pascagoula, Mississippi, and Washington D.C., upon his induction into the University of Mississippi Alumni Association 2010 Hall of Fame, and extend to Senator Lott and his family our best wishes for future successes.

     BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That this resolution be presented to Trent Lott, forwarded to the University of Mississippi Alumni Association and made available to the Capitol Press Corps.
