House Resolution 111

A RESOLUTION COMMENDING AND CONGRATULATING THE 2010-2011 SMITHVILLE HIGH SCHOOL SEMINOLE BAND FOR ITS OUTSTANDING PERFORMANCE ACCOMPLISHMENTS.

WHEREAS, the Smithville High School Seminole Band participated in the Mississippi High School Activities Association (MHSAA) State Marching Evaluation at Tupelo High School on October 9, 2010, where the band received Superior ratings in Drum Major, Color Guard and Drum Line with an overall rating of Excellent; and

WHEREAS, their performance at Tupelo qualified the band for the MHSAA State Marching Championships at Clinton High School on October 23, 2010, where they placed first in Music, Marching, Color Guard and General Effect with a second-place finish in Drum Line; and

WHEREAS, for the second year in a row the Smithville High School Seminole Band was named Class 1A State Champions; and

WHEREAS, on February 28, 2011, the band participated in the MHSAA Concert and Sight-reading Evaluation at Ridgeland High School where they received Superior ratings in Concert and Sight-reading, the only 1A band to attain that honor; and

WHEREAS, the 2010-2011 Smithville High School Seminole Band members are: Drum Major Krishniki Nails; color guard, Kellen Davis (captain), Summer Coleman, Martha Grace Cooley, Audrey Herren, Amber Hicks, Courtney Hubbard, Marisa Pitts, LaShae Smith and Katy Stephenson; drum line, Nicholas Sims (captain), Stoney Beck, Michael Bowen, Tommy Bowen, Claudia Bounds, Tyler Collums, Tyler Hood and Tanner Palmer; flute, Paige Edwards and Susan Marshall; clarinet, Kristan Morris (section leader), Kim Flippo, Emily Lay and Page Taylor; alto saxophone, Matt Cagle, Mandy Patterson and Jed Rutledge; trumpet, Jessica Hathcock (section leader), Corey Burdine, Anteja Butler, Matt Crocker, Makenzie Smith and Zack Tidwell; french horn, Malarie Dean and Stacey West; trombone, Luke Blaylock, Brianna Benton, Dakota Myhand, J.D. Rutledge and Jermaine Stratton; and tuba, TraShawn Standifer; and

WHEREAS, the Smithville High School Seminole Band is directed by Jeff Colburn who has broadened the band members' knowledge of music and refined their musical skills, making them the outstanding band that has brought great honor and pride to Smithville High School; and

WHEREAS, it is the policy of the House of Representatives to recognize and commend excellence, especially when evidenced by the youth of our state, who are its future:

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE STATE OF MISSISSIPPI, That we do hereby commend and congratulate the Smithville High School Seminole Band on the outstanding accomplishments of the 2010-2011 school year.

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That copies of this resolution be furnished to Smithville High School, Director Jeff Colburn and to the members of the Capitol Press Corps.
