House Resolution 37

A RESOLUTION COMMENDING THE COURAGE AND SPIRIT OF ENDURANCE OF SISTERS, JAMIE SCOTT AND GLADYS SCOTT, AND CONGRATULATING THEM UPON BEING NAMED AS CO-RECIPIENTS OF THE FANNIE LOU HAMER HUMAN RIGHTS AWARD ON THE OCCASION OF THE MISSISSIPPI WORKERS' CENTER FOR HUMAN RIGHTS 10TH ANNUAL BLACK HISTORY PROGRAM.

     WHEREAS, in honor and recognition of their courage and spirit of endurance, sisters, Jamie Scott and Gladys Scott are being bestowed by the Mississippi Workers' Center for Human Rights with the Fannie Lou Hamer Human Rights Award on the occasion of its 10th Annual Black History Program; and

     WHEREAS, Jamie and Gladys Scott, native daughters of Mississippi soil, were released from prison on January 7, 2011, after serving 16 years; and

     WHEREAS, since their release, Jamie and Gladys have continuously used their experience to inspire both currently and formerly incarcerated women and men; and

     WHEREAS, having avowed to dedicate their lives to the cause of justice and human rights for all, Jamie and Gladys are courageous and shining examples of those who have overcome extreme adversities to rebuild their shattered lives; and

     WHEREAS, it is the policy of the House of Representatives to acknowledge the image of the great Freedom Fighter, Fannie Lou Hamer, as a champion for the dispossessed and the disenfranchised, and those individuals, such as Jamie and Gladys Scott, who have become the banner holders for an enduring legacy:

     NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE STATE OF MISSISSIPPI, That we do hereby recognize and commend the courage and spirit of the endurance of sisters, Jamie Scott and Gladys Scott, upon being named co-recipients of the 2011 Fannie Lou Hamer Human Rights Award on the occasion of the 10th Annual Black History Celebration and extend best wishes for a successful transition into their newfound freedom and in all of their future endeavors.

     BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That copies of this resolution be furnished to Jamie Scott, Gladys Scott, the Mississippi Workers' Center for Human Rights and to the members of the Capitol Press Corps.
