Senate Resolution 14

(As Adopted by Senate)

A RESOLUTION RECOGNIZING AND EXPRESSING OUR APPRECIATION TO PAUL LACOSTE FOR HIS LEADERSHIP IN INCREASING THE MISSISSIPPI SENATE'S AWARENESS OF AND IMPROVING OUR OVERALL HEALTH.

WHEREAS, led by Paul Lacoste, 71 members of the Senate and House, 19 members of the Governor's staff, and 21 civilians worked out several days a week during the 2010 Regular Session to promote healthful living in a culture that prizes its sweet tea and fried food.  They've shed more than 1,300 pounds collectively, giving new meaning to cutting the fat out of state government; and

WHEREAS, lawmakers in other states have held weight-loss contests, however, Mississippi's program has been the most organized and productive; and

WHEREAS, the main coach for the workout program is 35-year-old Paul Lacoste, who was a linebacker at Mississippi State University and played pro football.  He gave weekly reports to each chamber on how its members were doing.  The leading chamber each week kept a marble trophy shaped like the State of Mississippi, and the trophy now resides outside the Senate Chamber:

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE OF THE STATE OF MISSISSIPPI, That we recognize and express our appreciation to Paul Lacoste for his leadership in increasing the Mississippi Senate's awareness of and improving our overall health.

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That this resolution be presented to Paul Lacoste and made available to the Capitol Press Corps.
