A RESOLUTION COMMENDING AND CONGRATULATING JOE MORROW ON BEING SELECTED AS THE 2009 STATE GAMES OF MISSISSIPPI AT&T MALE ATHLETE OF THE YEAR.
WHEREAS, Joe Morrow, an exceptional powerlifter from Amory, Mississippi, was selected as the 2009 State Games of Mississippi AT&T Male Athlete of the Year; and
WHEREAS, the award seeks to honor those athletes who personify the ideals of the State Games movement, such as participation, sportsmanship, achievement, effort and positive attitude; and
WHEREAS, a veteran participant in the State Games, Mr. Morrow holds an impressive number of four State Games Powerlifting Overall Gold Medals, having won the event in 2002, 2004, 2006 and 2009; and
WHEREAS, in addition to winning the Overall Gold in 2009, the 142-pound athlete took the Gold in the bench press at 335 pounds and lifted an amazing total of 1,405 pounds at the 2009 Games; and
WHEREAS, at 26 years of age, in addition to his State Games accomplishments, Joe Morrow has won several other tough competitions, including the 2009 American Powerlifting Association (APA) Raw National Championship, the 2008 WBPLA World Championship and the 2005 APA Junior National Championship; and
WHEREAS, in his first raw meet, the APA Raw Nationals in April 2009, Joe Morrow amazingly lifted ten times his body weight, winning best lifter and best bencher honors; and
WHEREAS, holding over 50 powerlifting records with the APA and the Southern Powerlifting Federation, Mr. Morrow, a four-time APA Mississippi State Champion, represents a dedicated spirit, whose sportsmanship is exhibited through his interaction with his peers and his congratulatory remarks to his fellow athletes; and
WHEREAS, Joe Morrow, who is ranked No. 1 in the Squat, No. 2 in the Bench Press, No. 1 in the Deadlift and No. 1 overall by PowerliftingWatch.com, is focused in his preparation for these various events, always working hard to master each skill and to be an all-around athlete; and
WHEREAS, Mr. Morrow humbly demonstrates the true spirit of the State Games of Mississippi, as he is committed to doing his best, enjoys the competition and demonstrates respect for all the athletes, volunteers and staff who work, plan and implement this annual classic; and
WHEREAS, it is with pride that we recognize this young Mississippi citizen who has brought honor to his community and state:
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE OF THE STATE OF MISSISSIPPI, That we do hereby commend and congratulate Joe Morrow on being selected as the 2009 State Games of Mississippi AT&T Male Athlete of the Year and extend best wishes to him on this honor.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That this resolution be presented to Joe Morrow and made available to the members of the Capitol Press Corps.
