A RESOLUTION COMMENDING DELTA SIGMA THETA SORORITY, INCORPORATED, ON THE OCCASION OF ITS "2010 STATEWIDE DELTA DAY AT THE CAPITOL."

     WHEREAS, Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Incorporated, a public service organization since its founding on January 13, 1913, by 22 college-educated, African-American women driven by a desire to empower the underserved through public service, will host its "2010 Statewide Delta Day at the Capitol" on March 4, 2010; and

     WHEREAS, as part of its national partnership with the United States Census Bureau, the ladies of this great organization are preparing up for its "Don't Be Counted Out" campaign, which seeks to urge and assist the citizens of this great state to return completed census forms to the bureau; and

     WHEREAS, "Delta Day at the Capitol" creates an environment for Deltas from across the state to engage in political educational forums, and this year's forums will focus on increasing participation in the United States census; and  

     WHEREAS, the ladies from the alumnae chapters of Bolivar County, Clay County, Greenville, Greenwood-Itta Bena, Hattiesburg, Jackson, Laurel, Madison County, Mississippi Gulf Coast, Moss Point, Pike County and Vicksburg, and from the college campuses of Delta State University (Kappa Pi), Jackson State University (Delta Pi) and Tougaloo College (Gamma Psi) have journeyed to the Capital City for training and insight into increasing census participation; and

     WHEREAS, this organization has over sixty chapters throughout the State of Mississippi, and over 900 chapters throughout the United States, England, Japan, Germany, the Virgin Islands, the Bahamas and the Republic of Korea; and

     WHEREAS, nationally, thousands of members of this extraordinary sorority travel from around the world to Washington, D.C., to attend "Delta Days in the Nation's Capitol," and internationally, to attend "Delta Days at the United Nations"; and

     WHEREAS, it is with pride that we commend this dedicated civic organization which has given and continues to give countless hours of public service to provide positive change throughout this great state, this nation and the world:

     NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE OF THE STATE OF MISSISSIPPI, That we do hereby commend Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Incorporated, for its national partnership with the United States Census Bureau, its "Don't Be Counted Out" campaign, and on the occasion of its "2010 Statewide Delta Day at the Capitol."

     BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That this resolution be presented to the state representatives of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc., and made available to the Capitol Press Corps.
