Senate Concurrent Resolution 674

A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION COMMENDING AND CONGRATULATING THE CALLAWAY HIGH SCHOOL "CHARGERS" BOYS BASKETBALL TEAM AND HEAD COACH WAYNE BRENT FOR WINNING BACK-TO-BACK MHSAA CLASS 5A/4A STATE CHAMPIONSHIPS AND FOR THEIR OUTSTANDING 2009-2010 SEASON.

WHEREAS, smothered by two defenders with another headed his way, Callaway High School "Chargers" Boys Basketball star guard Marquavius "Deville" Smith floated a high-arcing shot from just inside the free-throw line for the game winner with 1.2 seconds remaining in a heart-stopping 34-32 victory over Provine High School on March 7, 2010, for the Class 5A State Championship.  The win gives the Chargers back-to-back gold balls; and

WHEREAS, Callaway Coach Wayne Brent knew where he wanted the ball on the decisive play.  The Chargers (22-10) needed Smith's heroics after Provine, trailing 28-18 to start the fourth quarter, pulled even at 32-32.  The game was the third-lowest scoring MHSAA boys final in more than 50 years.  It was Callaway's second win in five games against its Jackson Public Schools rival; and

WHEREAS, Class 5A Champion Callaway, 23-10 and ranked No. 7 in The Clarion-Ledger Super 10, went for a second straight MHSAA Grand Slam Title, and fourth in a row for a Jackson Public Schools boys team on March 15, 2010, but lost to No. 3 Starkville High School; and

WHEREAS, the 2009-2010 Callaway High School "Chargers" Boys Basketball Team roster is:  Dontarrius Simmons, DéVion Smith, Jarvis Williams, Marcus Williams, Bryan Matlock, Matthew Jacobs, Curtis Clay, Jason Gibson, Corey Young, Malcolm Sanders, Jeverik Nelson, Rakeem Esco, Darius Patrick, Chris Walker, Marquavius "Deville" Smith and Terran Gilmore; Head Coach Wayne Brent; Assistant Coaches Charles Wansley, Louis Wright, Jr. and Brian Anderson; and

WHEREAS, it is with pride that we recognize this achievement by a group of student athletes who have brought pride to their school, their community and to the State of Mississippi:

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE OF THE STATE OF MISSISSIPPI, THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES CONCURRING THEREIN, That we do hereby commend and congratulate the Callaway High School "Chargers" Boys Basketball Team and Head Coach Wayne Brent for winning consecutive Mississippi High School Activities Association Class 5A/4A State Championships and for their outstanding 2009-2010 season, and extend our best wishes to the team, coaches, parents and sponsors for future successes.

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That this resolution be presented to Coach Wayne Brent and Principal Clinton Johnson for the team, forwarded to the Jackson School Board and made available to the Capitol Press Corps.
