Senate Concurrent Resolution 657

(As Adopted by Senate)

A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION COMMENDING AND CONGRATULATING THE HORN LAKE HIGH SCHOOL "LADY EAGLES" GIRLS BASKETBALL TEAM AND HEAD COACH JANNA LYONS FOR WINNING THEIR FIRST MHSAA CLASS 6A STATE CHAMPIONSHIP AND FOR THEIR OUTSTANDING 2009-2010 SEASON.

WHEREAS, Jasbriel Swain scored 14 points, Tia Coleman added 11 and the Horn Lake High School Girls Basketball Team cruised to a 40-28 win over Greenville-Weston to win the Mississippi High School Athletic Association Class 6A Girls State Basketball Championship on March 6, 2010, at the Mississippi Coliseum in Jackson, Mississippi; and

WHEREAS, the Lady Eagles (29-2) led by double digits for the most of the game, claiming the first title in program history and denying the Greenville-Weston "Honey Bees" their first crown; and

WHEREAS, Horn Lake Coach Janna Lyons held her one-month-old son Jayden in one hand, the signature game ball in the other, as her players proudly hoisted the Gold Ball - the first one in Horn Lake girls basketball history.  "It doesn't get much better than that," said Lyons.  "That was a testimony of this season as far as God blessing me with a child and a testament of how hard these girls worked to get this trophy.  We had some special players and my sophomores grew up.  It says a lot about this team and their ability to go through adversity.  This almost leaves you speechless"; and

WHEREAS, the Lady Eagles (29-2), ranked No. 6 in The Clarion-Ledger Super 10, put together a stellar defensive effort on Greenville's high-scoring Dandy Dozen Guard Breanna Lewis to claim their first title; and

WHEREAS, the Horn Lake roster is as follows:  Monique Biggins, Brittani Biggins, Meagan Church, Tia Coleman, Jasmine Edwards, Vetta Gordman, Brittany Grant, Dominique Jefferson, Jasmine Johnson, Savannah Kimmons, Robyn Lofton, Roslyn Odum, Vernisha Palmer and Jasbriel Swain; and Assistant Coach John Sandlin; and

WHEREAS, it is with great pride that we note this special accomplishment by a team of student athletes who have brought honor to their school, their community and to the State of Mississippi:

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE OF THE STATE OF MISSISSIPPI, THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES CONCURRING THEREIN, That we do hereby commend and congratulate the Horn Lake High School "Lady Eagles" Girls Basketball Team and Head Coach Janna Lyons for winning their first Mississippi High School Activities Association Class 6A State Championship and for their outstanding 2009-2010 season, and extend our best wishes for their future academic and athletic successes.

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That this resolution be presented to Coach Lyons and Principal Jim Ferguson for the team, forwarded to the Horn Lake School Board and made available to the Capitol Press Corps.
