A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION COMMENDING THE PROFESSIONAL AND CIVIC LEADERSHIP OF DR. FREDA M. BUSH, M.D., AND CONGRATULATING HER UPON HER APPOINTMENT AS THE CHAIR OF THE BOARD OF DIRECTORS OF THE FEDERATION OF STATE MEDICAL LICENSURE BOARDS.
WHEREAS, Dr. Freda M. Bush, M.D., has served on the State Board of Medical Licensure since 1994, has been President of the board since 2000, and in April 2010 she will be installed as Chair of the national Federation of State Medical Boards, a role which brings honor to her profession in her home state of Mississippi; and
WHEREAS, Freda McKissic Bush, M.D., FACOG is a partner in private practice with East Lakeland OB-GYN Associates in Jackson, Mississippi, and a Clinical Instructor in the Department of OB-GYN and Department of Family Medicine at the University of Mississippi Medical Center. She graduated from the University of Mississippi Medical School in 1983 and completed her residency training at the University of Tennessee in Memphis in 1987. She is certified by the American Board of Obstetrics and Gynocology; and
WHEREAS, Dr. Bush is a Board Member of The Medical Institute of Sexual Health and served as a Presidential appointee to the Presidential Advisory Council on HIV/AIDS (PACHA). She has served as a member of the Mississippi Task Force on Reducing Out-of-Wedlock Pregnancies. Dr. Bush is past President of the Central Mississippi Medical Society and alternate delegate to the American Medical Association. She has been a member of the Board of Directors of the Federation of State Medical Boards (FSMB) since 2003, currently serving as Chair-elect. She has served as Treasurer of the FSMB, a member of the USMLE Step 3 Committee and currently serves on the USMLE Composite Committee. In 2006, she received the Community Service Award from the Mississippi State Medical Association; and
WHEREAS, Freda coauthored the book, HOOKED, New Science on How Casual Sex is Affecting Our Children, with Joe S. McIlhaney, M.D., released August 2008. She was a contributing writer to Faith Matters: How African-American Faith Communities Can Help Prevent Teen Pregnancy, published by the National Campaign to Prevent Teen Pregnancy; and
WHEREAS, much of her time is spent speaking on sexuality, sexually transmitted diseases and social behavior education. This year she has presented for Heartbeat International Conference in Richmond, Virginia, CareNet in Atlanta, Georgia, and numerous others. She presented at the National Conference for Abstinence Educators, Washington, D.C., on Medical Accuracy in January 2008 and on Teen Brain and Casual Sex in February 2009. She presented "Teen Sex and the Brain," a Seminar for Health Professionals, PATH, Valparaiso, Indiana, April 29, 2008, and at the University of Minnesota in Minneapolis, in November 2008, "Sex and Evangelical Christianity" at The Center for Excellence in Sexual Health, Morehouse School of Medicine, Atlanta, Georgia, March 3, 2008, and a Sexual Health Clinical Interventions Workshop at the Christian Medical and Dental Association 2007 National Convention; and
WHEREAS, Dr. Bush served as Lead Panelist for a series of Town Hall meetings titled "Teens, Involved Parents and Sex (T.I.P.S.)," sponsored by the Mississippi State Medical Association Alliance, Hattiesburg, Jackson and Tupelo, Mississippi, February 2007. She has been interviewed on several television programs, including The Mike and Juliet Show on Fox News TV, CBS Early Show, Everyday with Marcus and Lisa on Family Net TV, as well as numerous radio programs, including Focus on the Family with Dr. James Dobson, Janet Parshall's America, The Marsha Summer Radio Show and the Debbie Chavez Radio Show. She has published articles in Charisma Magazine, Christianity Today, Christian Living Metro Jackson and the MSMA Journal; and
WHEREAS, she serves as a Medical Advisor for Heartbeat International and Medical Director to the Center for Pregnancy Choices, Metro Jackson and the Women's Resource Center of Jackson; and
WHEREAS, her passion is to help women to "raise a standard." To that end, she teaches and encourages a lifestyle of abstinence until marriage and fidelity within marriage. For seven years, she co-sponsored a conference on Abstinence and Youth in Jackson, Mississippi; and
WHEREAS, married for 40 years to her husband, Lee, they have four children and seven grandchildren; and
WHEREAS, it is with great pride that we recognize this health care professional whose civic contribution and professional excellence has brought honor to her family, her profession, her community and to the State of Mississippi:
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE OF THE STATE OF MISSISSIPPI, THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES CONCURRING THEREIN, That we do hereby commend the professional and civic leadership of Dr. Freda M. Bush, M.D., and congratulate her upon her appointment and installation as the Chair of the Board of Directors of the Federation of State Medical Licensure Boards, and extend our best wishes upon this auspicious occasion.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That this resolution be presented to Dr. Freda Bush, forwarded to the State Board of Medical Licensure and made available to the Capitol Press Corps.
