A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION COMMENDING THE LIFE AND MOURNING THE LOSS OF MRS. DOROTHY NELL SELF, ALDERWOMAN FOR THE TOWN OF DUMAS, MISSISSIPPI.
WHEREAS, Dorothy Nell Yancey Self, Alderwoman for the Town of Dumas, Mississippi, passed away on January 21, 2010; and
WHEREAS, Mrs. Self was born on January 14, 1934, in Union County to Earl and Marie Smith Yancey. She graduated from Dumas High School in 1951 and attended Northeast Mississippi Community College. She operated Nell's Beauty Shop in Dumas for 10 years; and
WHEREAS, Mrs. Self retired from the State Department of Health as a Social Worker after 19 years of service; and
WHEREAS, in 2005, she ran for Alderwoman of the Town of Dumas and was elected for her second term in 2009. She leaves a legacy of service and dedication to the government of her community; and
WHEREAS, she took pride in keeping her flower garden and yard beautiful, and enjoyed traveling. She was a devoted mother, grandmother, mother-in-law, sister, daughter and friend. Part of her Christian legacy is her unconditional love and forgiveness. She was a member of Dumas Baptist Church; and
WHEREAS, survivors include her mother, Marie Smith Yancey of Ripley; one daughter, Terry Self Crawford (Rick) of Dumas; two sons, Phillip Gordon Self of Decaturville, Tennessee, and Ronald Brent Self of Dumas; one brother, Dr. Rex Yancey (Ellon) of Ripley; two sisters-in-law, Jimmie Nell Yancey of New Albany and Mary Gail Yancey of Yuma, Arizona; four grandchildren, Dustin Crawford of New York City, Brandon and Nicholas Self of New Albany, and Janet Self of Ripley; and nephew, Senator Lee Yancey. She was preceded in death by her grandparents, Albert and Nancy Kent Smith, and Little Sam and Beulah Aldridge Yancey; her father, Henry Earl Yancey; two brothers, William L. "Buck" Yancey and Hershel Ray Yancey; one nephew, Scott Yancey; and her former husband father of her children, Gordon Self, Jr. Pallbearers will be Dr. Timothy Thompson, Dustin Crawford, Barry Yancey, Brandon Self, Nicholas Self, Brian Cooper, Lee Yancey, Dr. Don Yancey and Billy Yancey. Honorary pallbearers will be Mike Kent, Thomas Hall, Carol Stewart Herbert, Barbara Brock, Bobbie Huddleston, David Ray Yancey, David Brown, Billy Joe Self, Gene Chism, Carl Self and Jan Beith; the Adult Women's Sunday School classes at Dumas Baptist Church; the past and present Mayor, Aldermen and Clerk of the Town of Dumas; and the past and present employees of the State Department of Health, District II; and
WHEREAS, it is with sadness that we note the passing of this respected public servant:
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE OF THE STATE OF MISSISSIPPI, THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES CONCURRING THEREIN, That we do hereby commend the life and mourn the loss of Mrs. Dorothy Nell Self, second term Alderwoman for the Town of Dumas, Mississippi, and extend our sympathy to her surviving family on her passing.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That this resolution be presented to the surviving family of Mrs. Self, forwarded to the Mayor and Board of Aldermen of Dumas, and made available to the Capitol Press Corps.
