Senate Concurrent Resolution 557

A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION RECOGNIZING THAT MAY IS NATIONAL BIKE MONTH AND DESIGNATING MAY 17, 2010, AS "BIKE-TO-WORK DAY IN MISSISSIPPI" TO PROMOTE PUBLIC AWARENESS OF BICYCLE USE AND SAFETY.

     WHEREAS, May is National Bike Month and the League of American Bicyclists promotes Bike-to-Work Week from May 11-15 annually; and

     WHEREAS, for more than a century, the bicycle has been an important part of the lives of most Americans; and

     WHEREAS, today, millions of Americans engage in bicycling because it is a viable and environmentally-sound form of transportation, an excellent form of fitness and provides quality family recreation; and

     WHEREAS, the education of cyclists and motorists as to the proper and safe operation of bicycles is important to ensure the safety and comfort of all users; and

     WHEREAS, the League of American Bicyclists and independent cyclists throughout our state are promoting greater public awareness of bicycle operation and safety education in an effort  to reduce accidents, injuries and fatalities for all:

     NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE OF THE STATE OF MISSISSIPPI, THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES CONCURRING THEREIN, That we do hereby recognize that May is National Bike Month and hereby designate May 17, 2010, as "Bike-to-Work Day in Mississippi" to promote public awareness of bicycle use and safety education, and to be more aware of cyclists on our streets and highways.

     BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That this resolution be forwarded to the Mississippi Department of Public Safety and the League of American Bicyclists and be made available to the Capitol Press Corps.
