A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION COMMENDING AND CONGRATULATING THE SOUTH PANOLA HIGH SCHOOL "TIGERS" FOOTBALL TEAM AND HEAD COACH LANCE POGUE FOR WINNING THE INAUGURAL MISSISSIPPI HIGH SCHOOL ACTIVITIES ASSOCIATION CLASS 6A STATE CHAMPIONSHIP WHICH IS A RECORD EIGHTH STATE CHAMPIONSHIP.
WHEREAS, delivering one of the most dominating performances in state finals history, South Panola High School "Tigers" Football Team took out 12 months of frustration with a 56-14 wipeout of Oak Grove to win the inaugural Class 6A State Championship and capture a record Mississippi High School Activities Association eighth State Championship; and
WHEREAS, the victory, in the snow, before an estimated 9,000 was South Panola's 117th in 120 games dating back to the start of the 2002 season. It was the two most recent losses that lit South Panola's fire for much of this season; and
WHEREAS, "We put it all together," said Tigers Coach Lance Pogue, who won his second state crown in three seasons as his team equaled the MHSAA championship game record for most points. "A lot of people didn't give us a chance early in the year, but I knew the makeup of our team. The way we're playing right now, I hate the season is over"; and
WHEREAS, just as it happened six years ago when appropriately nicknamed "University of South Panola" beat Oak Grove 33-14, this was no contest, except this year it snowed. The Tigers will return 15 of 22 starters from this season's unusually young team; and
WHEREAS, the South Panola running game was as potent as ever as the snow fell at Mississippi Veterans Memorial Stadium. The Tigers finished with 475 total yards, including 387 yards on 52 rushing attempts. Nicholas Parker (18 carries, 146 yards, 4 TDs) and Domonique Carothers (14 carries, 101 yards). Junior Qyendaris Griffin is the heir apparent to tote the rock in 2010 behind an O-line that returns four starters; and
WHEREAS, at the Championship game, the public address announcer had to warn the fans not to throw snowballs. How often do you hear that at Mississippi Veterans Memorial Stadium? The snow wasn't enough to slow down a South Panola offense that tied a record for points scored (56) in a title game. South Panola is now 117-3 since the 2002 season began; and
WHEREAS, South Panola Tigers High School Football Roster: Kendrick Market; Qyendairs Griffin, RB; Al Hentz, DB; Nicholas Parker, RB; Lee Self, QB; Marcus Henry, WR; Pierre Conner, DB; Justin Wright, LB; Keunte Turner, LB; Robert Wright, WR/DB; Nicklos Brassell, WR/DB; Antonio Connor; Timothy Gleaton, DB; Bobby Epps, QB; Lageofrey Glover, LB; Montez Griffin, WR; Gregdrecus Leland, DB; Deshun Henderson, WR/DB; Jonathan Bownes, FB; Hunter Lawrence, FB/TE; Charles Gray, RB; Joseph Pope, LB; L. WHEREAS, it is with great pride that we recognize the continuing achievements of this talented group of student athletes whose incredible success of eight State Championship seasons and 117 wins have brought honor to their school, their enthusiastic community and to the State of Mississippi:
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE OF THE STATE OF MISSISSIPPI, THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES CONCURRING THEREIN, That we do hereby commend and congratulate the South Panola High School "Tigers" Football Team and Head Coach Lance Pogue for winning the inaugural MHSAA Class 6A State Football Championship, which is a record eighth State Championship, and extend to them our best wishes for future academic and athletic success.
