A RESOLUTION COMMENDING THE MILITARY AND CIVILIAN SERVICE OF AUTHOR GEORGE THATCHER.

     WHEREAS, Mr. George Thatcher's steadfast commitment to our state in business and as an author is to be honored and his courageous actions as a soldier were nothing short of heroic for our country during a difficult time; and

     WHEREAS, George Thatcher of Gulfport, Mississippi, was born on September 18, 1922, graduated from Gulfport High School, the University of Mississippi, and later continued in graduate studies at both Indiana University and Oxford University of England; and

     WHEREAS, Mr. Thatcher dutifully joined the United States Army to serve his country, advancing in the ranks all the way from private to major, and for his actions in Korea, he earned a Bronze Star for his bravery at the battle of White Horse Mountain; and

     WHEREAS, the Bronze Star is one of the military's highest awards for the skill and courage under fire that Mr. Thatcher bravely displayed during the Korean War; and

     WHEREAS, throughout his time in the banking and advertising industries, Mr. Thatcher distinguished himself with his diligent work ethic and profound knowledge of both banking and advertising; and

     WHEREAS, after completion of his stellar business career, Mr. Thatcher continued his life as a newspaper columnist, author and public radio commentator; and

     WHEREAS, countless days have been brightened by Mr. Thatcher's daily column in the Sun Herald called Scenes from the Beach; and

     WHEREAS, Mr. Thatcher is the author of five books including Beach Walks, Beach Walks II, Scenes from the Beach, a Decade of Beach Walks, Misrepresentation in Mississippi and Prayers in Sickness; and

     WHEREAS, living life to the fullest, Mr. Thatcher is an avid tennis player and golfer, and he enjoys listening to classical music, walking and traveling overseas; and

     WHEREAS, the success of the State of Mississippi, the strength of our communities, and the overall vitality of American society depend in great measure upon the dedication of people like Mr. Thatcher, who has used his considerable talents and resources to serve others throughout his entire life:

     NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE STATE OF MISSISSIPPI, That we do hereby commend the military and civilian service of Mr. George Thatcher, and extend warmest wishes for many more years of good health, peace and happiness.

     BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That copies of this resolution be furnished to Mr. George Thatcher and to the members of the Capitol Press Corps.
