House Resolution 106

A RESOLUTION COMMENDING AND CONGRATULATING HOLMES COMMUNITY COLLEGE-GRENADA CAMPUS' ALPHA MU BETA CHAPTER OF PHI THETA KAPPA UPON BEING NAMED MOST DISTINGUISHED CHAPTER AT THE 2010 ANNUAL INTERNATIONAL CONVENTION.

     WHEREAS, Holmes Community College-Grenada Campus' Alpha Mu Beta Chapter of Phi Theta Kappa took top honors as Most Distinguished Chapter at the 2010 annual international convention; and

     WHEREAS, the Most Distinguished Chapter Award is given to the chapter that has received the highest overall scores in the three hallmark categories of scholarship, leadership and service; and

     WHEREAS, the Alpha Mu Beta Chapter received the prestigious recognition largely based upon its notable projects on obesity prevention and recycling, a project aided by a grant from the Mississippi Department of Environmental Quality; and

     WHEREAS, more than 3,600 representatives from 500-plus chapters gathered in Orlando, Florida, in early April 2010 to celebrate Honors in Action and the 92nd Annual Convention of Phi Theta Kappa; and

     WHEREAS, headquartered in Jackson, Mississippi, and with over 2,000,000 members in more than 1,200 chapters across the globe, Phi Theta Kappa is the international honor society of two-year colleges and academic programs, particularly community colleges and junior colleges; and

     WHEREAS, Phi Theta Kappa's purpose is to recognize and encourage scholarship among two-year college students by providing an outlet for leadership development, fellowship among student members, community service and continuing academic excellence; and

     WHEREAS, to qualify for initial Phi Theta Kappa membership, a student must maintain a GPA of 3.5 or higher, and must maintain a high academic record to remain a member in good standing in the society; and

     WHEREAS, it is the policy of the House of Representatives to commend and congratulate excellence when displayed by the young leaders of the State of Mississippi, who are its future:

     NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE STATE OF MISSISSIPPI, That we do hereby commend and congratulate Holmes Community College-Grenada Campus' Alpha Mu Beta Chapter Of Phi Theta Kappa upon being named Most Distinguished Chapter at the 2010 annual international convention, and extend to its members and sponsors best wishes in all of their future endeavors.

     BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That copies of this resolution be furnished to Holmes Community College and to the members of the Capitol Press Corps.
