House Concurrent Resolution 143

A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION COMMENDING THE 1984 RUST COLLEGE LADY BEARCATS BASKETBALL TEAM UPON BEING INDUCTED INTO THE INAUGURAL RUST COLLEGE ATHLETIC HALL OF FAME.

     WHEREAS, the 1984 Rust College Lady Bearcats Basketball Team was inducted into the inaugural Rust College Athletic Hall of Fame during the 143rd Founders' Celebration which was held the week beginning on November 1, 2009; and

     WHEREAS, history was made 25 years ago when Head Coach Dr. A.J. Stovall and the 1984 Lady Bearcats took their winning basketball program to new heights by capturing the 1984 NCAA Division III Womens Basketball Championship; and

     WHEREAS, in dramatic fashion, the Lady Bearcats defeated Elizabethtown College in the championship game with a buzzer-beating shot, winning the game by a score of 51-49; and

     WHEREAS, the 1984 team was comprised of the following Rust College Athletic Hall of Fame inductees:  Catherine Milton, Diane Buchanan, Diane Ayers, Phyllis Phillips, Sarah Young, Angela Agnew-Brazell, Sandra Ivory, Brenda Christian-Lawrence-Pree, Mittie Heidelberg, Louise Sanders-Tate, Barbara Knox-Seymour, Berta Robinson, Team Captain Nancy Binion-Relliford, and also recognized was Team Manager Bernard Seymour; and

     WHEREAS, it is the policy of this Legislature to commend such a remarkable group of athletes as the 1984 Rust College Lady Bearcats, who have brought great pride to their college, their community and to the State of Mississippi:

     NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE STATE OF MISSISSIPPI, THE SENATE CONCURRING THEREIN, That we do hereby commend the 1984 Rust College Lady Bearcats Basketball Team upon being inducted into the inaugural Rust College Athletic Hall of Fame and express best wishes for continued success in all of their future endeavors.

     BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That copies of this resolution be furnished to Dr. A.J. Stovall, the members of the 1984 Lady Bearcats, Team Manager Bernard Seymour, and to the members of the Capitol Press Corps.
