A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION COMMENDING AND CONGRATULATING THE OUR LADY ACADEMY CRESCENTS VOLLEYBALL TEAM FOR WINNING THE 2009 MISSISSIPPI HIGH SCHOOL ACTIVITIES ASSOCIATION CLASS I STATE CHAMPIONSHIP.

     WHEREAS, the Our Lady Academy Crescent Volleyball Team has completed yet another outstanding season of play in 2009, leaving nothing to chance and taking no prisoners in its quest to continue its supreme reign as state champions; and

     WHEREAS, with an astonishing 28-8 record this year, the Crescents won their 10th consecutive Division 8 Championship, and won the Class I State Championship for the fourth consecutive time and the sixth in the last eight years; and

     WHEREAS, in addition to the division and state championship titles, the Crescents made an impressive showing in tournament placing, carrying away first place honors at the Ridgeland Tourism Commission Set It Off Challenge and second place finishes at both the Hammond Tournament and the Our Lady Academy Kickoff Classic; and

     WHEREAS, the united effort put forth by the team made the Crescents a formidable force to be reckoned with on the court as evidenced by these accomplishments, as well as the honors and recognitions received by several individual players, including: the selection of Kirsty Schmitt and Blake Stefano to the All-State Tournament Team; the naming of Kirsty Schmitt, Erin Gibson, Blake Stefano and Callie McNally to the All-Division Team; and the tapping of Kirsty Schmitt as the Sun Herald Player of the Year; and

     WHEREAS, the skills and fortitude of senior team member, Kirsty Schmitt, were recognized as record setting, as she led all girls in the state this season with 515 kills, and will leave her mark at Our Lady Academy as the all-time kills leader with 1201; and

     WHEREAS, the 2009 (OLA) Girls Volleyball Roster consisted of the following girls:  Seniors, Kirsty Schmitt and Mischa Tice; Juniors, Erin Gibson, Renee Hotard, Callie McNally and Kelly McLeod; Sophomores, Caroline Collins, Reagan Huey, Kristen Morel, Christy Parnell and Blake Stefano; and Freshman, Katherine Gargiulo; and

     WHEREAS, the Our Lady Academy Crescents have been superbly coached and inspired by Head Coach Mike Meyers, who earned the designated honors of being selected as Coach of the Year by the Mississippi Association of Coaches, and Assistant Coaches Rick Rechtein and Steve Reboul, who worked seamlessly to refine the players' skills in execution; and

     WHEREAS, at Our Lady Academy, participation in athletics is viewed as an important component in the overall educational experience, as it fosters the development of sportsmanship, camaraderie and physical fitness; and

     WHEREAS, it is with great pride that we recognize the special accomplishments of these student athletes who have brought honor to their school, their community and to the State of Mississippi:

     NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE STATE OF MISSISSIPPI, THE SENATE CONCURRING THEREIN, That we do hereby commend and congratulate the Our Lady Academy Girls Volleyball Team and their coaches for its outstanding 2009 season and for winning the Class I State Championship for the fourth consecutive year, and extend to the team, coaches, staff, parents and sponsors best wishes on this great accomplishment and continued success in all of their future athletic and academic endeavors.

     BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That copies of this resolution be furnished to Coach Mike Meyers, Principal Sue Goggins and to the members of the Capitol Press Corps.
