A RESOLUTION COMMENDING THE LIFE, LEGACY AND ACCOMPLISHMENTS OF MRS. CAROLYN ANN MOSBY WEST, "THE FIRST LADY OF THE CITY OF NATCHEZ" AND EXPRESSING DEEPEST SYMPATHY TO HER FAMILY AND FRIENDS UPON HER PASSING.

     WHEREAS, Mrs. Carolyn Ann Mosby West, who was the First Lady of the City of Natchez, departed this earthly life on April 19, 2007, at the age of 57, to enter into eternal rest, causing great sorrow and loss to her caring family and many friends; and

     WHEREAS, Mrs. West was born on May 30, 1950, in Washington, Mississippi, to her loving parents, Charles and Thelma Mosby, and being reared in Christian principles, she accepted Christ as her personal savior in 1962 and joined Mount Nebo Baptist Church under the leadership of Reverend T.C. Johnson; and

     WHEREAS, an avid believer in education, Mrs. West broke racial barriers by being one of the first African Americans to graduate from Natchez High School in 1968; and

     WHEREAS, Mrs. West married Phillip C. West, a former distinguished member of the Mississippi House of Representatives  who is the current Mayor of the City of Natchez, on September 4, 1971, and early in their marriage, she joined King Solomon Baptist Church and later joined Rose Hill Baptist Church, where she served as an usher and made all members and visitors feel welcome with her warm smile and delightful spirit; and

     WHEREAS, Mrs. West continued her education after high school and graduated from Southern University in 1971 with her undergraduate degree and Alcorn State University, in 1994, with her master of science degree in education; and

     WHEREAS, wanting to make a meaningful difference, Mrs. West was an elementary teacher for more than 34 years where she influenced her young students to be productive citizens of this state; and

     WHEREAS, Mrs. West was a contributing member to several organizations such as the following:  Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Incorporated, National Education Association, the Mississippi Education Association and a lifetime member of the NAACP; and

     WHEREAS, Mrs. West was lovingly supported in all of her endeavors by her husband, Mayor Phillip C. West and their children, Kareem and Samuel, along with her stepdaughters, Dana and Danessa; and

     WHEREAS, although Mrs. West has crossed the river of life to now stand on golden heavenly shores, the legacy of her memory will continue to live in the hearts of her survivors; and

     WHEREAS, it is the policy of the House of Representatives to commend the life and accomplishments of such an inspiring educator, political activist and Christian family woman as Mrs. Carolyn Ann Mosby West whose life was a beacon of light and love:

     NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE STATE OF MISSISSIPPI, That we do hereby commend the life and legacy of Mrs. Carolyn Ann Mosby West and express deepest sympathy to her family and friends upon her passing.

     BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That copies of this resolution be furnished to the family of Mrs. Carolyn Ann Mosby West and the members of the Capitol Press Corps.
