A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION RECOGNIZING THE CENTENNIAL ANNIVERSARY OF THE ESTABLISHMENT OF UNITED PARCEL SERVICE OF AMERICA, INC. (UPS) AND THE CONTRIBUTIONS OF THE COMPANY TO THE CITIZENS OF MISSISSIPPI.
WHEREAS, the 100th Anniversary of United Parcel Service recognizes and celebrates the contributions of UPS to the people of Mississippi, both economically and philanthropically; and
WHEREAS, on August 28, 2007, United Parcel Service of America, Inc. (UPS) will celebrate its 100th Anniversary. Over the past 100 years, the world has witnessed the transformation of UPS from a single-city bicycle messenger company into the world's largest package delivery company; and
WHEREAS, UPS was founded in Seattle as a messenger service in 1907 by a 19-year-old teenager who borrowed $100.00 to start the service. Over the subsequent 100 years, much of it guided by founder Jim Casey, UPS transformed itself into a department store delivery service; a common carrier offering package delivery service throughout the United States; an international package delivery service with its own airline and now, a trusted business partner that literally enables commerce for its customers by synchronizing the flow of goods, information and money; and
WHEREAS, UPS employs more than 427,000 people; operates the world's largest package delivery network; operates the planet's eighth-largest airline; utilizes almost 92,000 vehicles; and offers an ever-expanding array of supply chain services. UPS has transformed its organization dramatically, from a company primarily focused on package delivery in the United States to a broader provider of transportation-based and supply chain services. UPS today stands as a critical pipeline for global economic activity; and
WHEREAS, UPS is the world's largest package delivery company and a global leader in supply chain services, offering an extensive range of options for synchronizing the movement of goods, information and funds. UPS is headquartered in Atlanta, Georgia, and serves more than 200 countries and territories worldwide; and
WHEREAS, UPS has served Mississippi since 1971. In Mississippi, UPS employs more than 2,200 people and operates 22 package sorting facilities. UPS makes more than 75,000 package deliveries each business day in Mississippi, connecting people, communities and businesses; and
WHEREAS, UPS donates thousands of dollars annually to organizations, including the Mississippi Food Network and The United Way, reflecting the company's emphasis on community service and citizenship; and
WHEREAS, UPS donated $1.25 Million to assist Hurricane Katrina relief efforts for Mississippi and Gulf Coast residents; and
WHEREAS, UPS will continue to both provide a substantial economic impact to the people of Mississippi and focus on cultivating deep partnerships with the communities it serves. The services UPS provides connect the people of Mississippi to more than 200 countries through an expansive transportation network that truly synchronizes global commerce; and
WHEREAS, UPS has grown from a $100.00 firm in 1907 to a $47 Billion company last year. A key factor in UPS's success has been a willingness to transform -- from a ground company to an air express company -- from a U.S. company to an international company -- from a paper-based company to a hi-tech company and now, from a shipping company to a global supply chain company; and
WHEREAS, it is with great pride that we acknowledge the considerable contributions of this company to the civic-charitable-and economic well-being of the State of Mississippi:
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE OF THE STATE OF MISSISSIPPI, THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES CONCURRING THEREIN, That we do hereby recognize the Centennial (100th) Celebration of United Parcel Service of America, Inc. (UPS), and recognize the contributions of this company to the citizens of Mississippi.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That this resolution be presented to representatives of United Parcel Service of America, Inc., and be made available to the Capitol Press Corps.
