A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION COMMENDING AND CONGRATULATING JACKSON STATE UNIVERSITY ALL-AMERICAN FOOTBALL STAR AND NFL ALL-PRO WITH THE HOUSTON OILERS ROBERT LORENZO BRAZILE, JR., FROM MOBILE, ALABAMA, UPON HIS INDUCTION INTO THE MISSISSIPPI SPORTS HALL OF FAME, CLASS OF 2007.
WHEREAS, the Mississippi Sports Hall of Fame has unveiled the Class of 2007, which features Robert Lorenzo Brazile, Jr., All-American and All-SWAC football standout at Jackson State University and 7-time NFL All-Pro for the Houston Oilers; and
WHEREAS, Robert Brazile's nicknames were "Dr. Doom" and "Mr. Versatile"; and
WHEREAS, Robert began his collegiate football career as a Tight End and switched to Linebacker in his Sophomore season; and
WHEREAS, Brazile was one of three JSU athletes that were first-round draft choices in 1975 along with Mississippi Sports Hall of Fame member Walter Payton, who was picked by the Chicago Bears, and Eugene Short, who was selected by the NBA's New York Knicks; and
WHEREAS, Robert Brazile's athletic achievements are impressive:
· Inducted into the Jackson State Athletic Hall of Fame, 2003;
· Selected to the Sheridan Broadcasting Network 100 Year All-Time Black College Football Team, 1993;
· NFL Career Totals: (1975-1984)
Team record 147 consecutive games played.
Seven-time All-Pro.
13 interceptions for 201 return yards.
11 QB sacks.
· 1980 Houston Oilers, team record 11-5, lost to Oakland in Wild Card playoff 27-7 -- Pro Bowl;
· 1979 Houston Oilers, team record 11-5, defeated Denver 13-7 in Wild Card playoff; defeated San Diego 17-14 in AFC Division playoff; lost AFC Championship to Pittsburg 27-13 -- Pro Bowl;
· 1978 Houston Oilers, team record 10-6, defeated Miami 17-9 in Wild Card playoff; defeated New England 31-14 in AFC Division playoff; lost AFC Championship to Pittsburg 34-5 -- Pro Bowl;
· 1977 Houston Oilers, team record 8-6 -- Pro Bowl;
· 1976 Houston Oilers, team record 5-9 (Houston Oilers Media Relations, Total Football II) -- Pro Bowl;
· 1975 Houston Oilers, team record 10-4, AP Defensive Rookie of the Year; AFC Rookie of the Year; First-round draft choice, 6th player chosen overall; played in 1975 Senior Bowl; and
WHEREAS, as a Jackson State Tiger, he played Linebacker, 1971-1974; 1974 Jackson State Tigers, team record 7-4; school record 129 solo tackles, 79 assists; led SWAC in interceptions with 9; consensus All-SWAC First Team; Sheridan Black College All-America First Team; NAIA All-American; in 1973 Jackson State Tigers, team record 9-2, SWAC Champions; in 1972 Jackson State Tigers, team record 8-3, SWAC Champions; in 1971 Jackson State Tigers, team record 9-1-1; and
WHEREAS, it is with great pride that we recognize this outstanding athlete who has brought honor to his university and to the State of Mississippi:
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE OF THE STATE OF MISSISSIPPI, THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES CONCURRING THEREIN, That we do hereby commend and congratulate Robert Lorenzo Brazile, Jr., All-American and All-SWAC Football Star at Jackson State University and 7-time NFL All-Pro with the Houston Oilers, upon his induction into the Mississippi Sports Hall of Fame, Class of 2007, and wish him and his family continued success in all their future endeavors.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That this resolution be presented to Robert Brazile at induction ceremonies on July 27-28, 2007, and be made available to the Capitol Press Corps.
