A RESOLUTION COMMENDING MISS JAMILAH AKILAH PERKINS FOR HER ACADEMIC SUCCESSES AND BEING CROWNED 2006-2007 MISS GREENWOOD HIGH SCHOOL AND CONGRATULATING HER UPON THE OCCASION OF HER HIGH SCHOOL GRADUATION.

     WHEREAS, Miss Jamilah Akilah Perkins will be graduating from Greenwood High School with high honors, where she was chosen as Miss Greenwood High School, leaving the comfort of her home and being accepted to attend either Tougaloo College or Spellman College; and

     WHEREAS, Jamilah is the daughter of Representative Willie Perkins and Mayor Sheriel Perkins and hopes to become an attorney and dermatologist; and

     WHEREAS, as a true student of academia, she has completed many honor courses, such as Algebra I and II Excel, Geometry Excel, Trigonometry, Pre-Calculus, English I, II and III, Biology I Excel, Human Anatomy and Physiology, Chemistry, World History, United States History Excel, United States Government Excel, Economics Excel and Spanish I; and   

     WHEREAS, she has received many awards during her high school career, including Superintendent Scholar from Grades 9-12, Perfect Attendance from Grades 9-11, Award for Outstanding Proficiency in American History from the World Life Insurance Society, Science Fair Winner for the Local, State and Regional Competition, United States Academy of Achievement, Captain's Award, Band Letterman for the last three years, Who's Who Among American Scholars, January 2007 Rotary Club Student of the Month; and

     WHEREAS, she participates in school activities as a member of the Beta Club; the National Honor Society, Vice President;  Academic Team; Mu Alpha Theta; Marching and Symphonic Band; Feature Dancer Line, Captain; Student Government Association, Treasurer; Foreign Language Club; Wildlife Club; Yearbook Staff; Girls and Boys Basketball Teams, Bookkeeper; Prideteam; and the Lions Club; and

     WHEREAS, being the well-rounded student she is, Jamilah is also very active in the community with the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP); the Greenwood Voters' League; youth board member of Leflore and Humphreys Counties Partnership for a Healthy Mississippi; Drama Club; Parent Teacher Student Organization (P.T.S.O.); and the 2005 and 2006 Campaigns to Elect Sheriel Perkins as Mayor of Greenwood, Mississippi; and

     WHEREAS, as a child of God, Jamilah is an active member of the Providence Missionary Baptist Church, where she is a member of the youth choir, the Youth Enrichment Session (Y.E.S.), and one of the youth speakers for the 2007 annual youth program; and

     WHEREAS, during her dedicated youth activities for the church, Jamilah has been chosen as Youth of the Year and has won the oratorical contest for the National Baptist Convention as a freshman competing against seniors throughout the state; and

     WHEREAS, in 2002 and 2003, she served as a page with the Mississippi House of Representatives; and

     WHEREAS, it is the policy of the House of Representatives to recognize Mississippi students who strive to achieve excellence in their academics as well as their activities in the community:

     NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE STATE OF MISSISSIPPI, That we do hereby commend Miss Jamilah Akilah Perkins for her academic successes and being crowned 2006-2007 Miss Greenwood High School and congratulate her upon the occasion of her high school graduation.

     BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That copies of this resolution be furnished to Miss Jamilah Akilah Perkins, Representative Willie Perkins, Mayor Sheriel Perkins and to the members of the Capitol Press Corps.
