A RESOLUTION COMMENDING REPRESENTATIVE JAMES (J.B.) MARKHAM FOR HIS LEGISLATIVE LEGACY AND CONGRATULATING HIM UPON THE OCCASION OF HIS RETIREMENT FROM THE MISSISSIPPI HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES.
WHEREAS, Representative James (J.B.) Markham, an honored and cherished member of the Mississippi House of Representatives, will make the 2007 legislative year his last when he retires; and
WHEREAS, the Honorable James (J.B.) Markham, began his legislative service in 1997 after edging out a field of 14 candidates by the citizens of District 20, which is composed of parts of Lowndes and Monroe Counties; and
WHEREAS, Representative Markham has utilized the wisdom and experience that he has accrued over the years to guide him in his duties as Vice Chairman of Military Affairs, and currently serves the House as a committee member of Appropriations, County Affairs, Education, Apportionment and Elections, Oil, Gas and Other Minerals and the Joint Legislative Committee on Redistricting; and
WHEREAS, born March 11, 1946, in Amory, Mississippi, Representative James (J.B.) Markham grew up on a farm in the Splunge Community; after graduating from Smithville High School, he attended Itawamba Community College and Mississippi State University, where he obtained bachelor of science and master of education degrees before teaching three years at Smithville High School and working in school administration in the Monroe County School District for 26 years; and
WHEREAS, serving in numerous organizations, Representative Markham is an active member of Farm Bureau, member of Monroe County and State Educator's Organizations, United Way of Greater Monroe County and Splunge Rural Community Development Club; and
WHEREAS, an active member of St. Andrew's United Methodist Church in Amory, Representative Markham serves on the Administrative Board, Pastor Parish Committee and as a Sunday School Teacher; and
WHEREAS, Representative Markham is a strong man of faith, who has been lovingly supported by his family: wife of 37 years, Diane Plunkett Markham (deceased); children, Tamara, Jeffrey, Justin and Traci; and four grandchildren; and
WHEREAS, Representative Markham's congenial nature, constructive attitude and forthright manner have had a positive influence on all those who have had the pleasure of working with this highly respected member of the House; and
WHEREAS, it is the policy of the House of Representatives to honor one of our own, who has represented his district as well as this legislative body with honor and dignity:
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE STATE OF MISSISSIPPI, That we do hereby commend Representative James (J.B.) Markham for his legislative legacy and congratulate him upon the occasion of his retirement from the Mississippi House of Representatives.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That copies of this resolution be furnished to Representative James (J.B.) Markham, and to the members of the Capitol Press Corps.
