A RESOLUTION COMMENDING MS. ROSHEKA MONIQUE DAVIS FOR WINNING THE 2006 NATIONAL ASSOCIATION OF FEDERATED COLORED WOMEN AND YOUTH AFFILIATES NATIONAL CONVENTION ORATORICAL CONTEST AND FOR HER MANY OTHER ACHIEVEMENTS.

     WHEREAS, in July 2006, Ms. Rosheka Monique Davis attended the National Association of Federated Colored Women and Youth Affiliates National Convention and won First Place in the district and state preteen oratorical contests; and

     WHEREAS, she also won First Place for her scrapbook, Second Place for her recital of "I'm Determined to be Somebody Someday" and a trophy for "Youth of the Year"; and

     WHEREAS, because of her fantastic oratorical skills, she will travel to Fort Lauderdale, Florida, in 2007 to compete for the regional award again; and

     WHEREAS, this talented 12-year-old is the daughter of Ms. Rosia Davis, granddaughter of the late Allen and Mary Frances Andrews, great-granddaughter of the late Ms. Rhoda J. Davis, and the goddaughter of Ms. Ruby Davis; and

     WHEREAS, she is a dutiful sixth grade student at Magnolia Elementary School where she is an honor student and has received a Principal's Scholar Award; and

     WHEREAS, although she is a mere 12 years old, she has earned many honors from organizations in which she is a member, including being selected as February 2006 Student of the Month for the Boys and Girls Club where she is a four-year member, placed First at Mississippi State University and Third at Jackson State University in public speaking contests as a member of the 4-H Club, placed First in the District and State competitions in talent in 2003, 2004 and 2005 for the Fannie Style Gayden Junior Federated Club, and in 2005 attended the Southern Regional Conference for that organization where she took First Place; and

     WHEREAS, she has also gained recognition for her artistic talents such as dancing with Dance Movement by Susan White and participating in a Gospel star search that resulted in her recording being sent to Black Entertainment Television; and  

     WHEREAS, it is the policy of the House of Representatives to recognize and commend young people such as Ms. Rosheka Monique Davis who strive for excellence and are positive role models for others:

     NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE STATE OF MISSISSIPPI, That we do hereby commend Ms. Rosheka Monique Davis for winning the 2006 National Association of Federated Colored Women and Youth Affiliates National Convention Oratorical Contest and for her many other achievements.

     BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That copies of this resolution be furnished to Ms. Rosheka Davis and to the members of the Capitol Press Corps.
