A RESOLUTION COMMENDING AND CONGRATULATING THE MISSISSIPPI VALLEY STATE UNIVERSITY DELTA DEVILS MEN'S BASKETBALL TEAM AND HEAD COACH JAMES GREEN FOR WINNING THE SOUTHWESTERN ATHLETIC CONFERENCE (SWAC) REGULAR SEASON TITLE AND FOR THEIR OUTSTANDING 2006-2007 RECORD.
WHEREAS, the Mississippi Valley State University Delta Devils Men's Basketball Team won the Southwestern Athletic Conference regular season title after defeating the University of Arkansas-Pine Bluff 63-50, ending the season with a 13-5 SWAC record and an 18-16 overall mark; and
WHEREAS, in the conference tournament, Valley beat Alabama State 62-52 and Texas Southern University 54-50, but fell to Jackson State University in the championship game; and
WHEREAS, early in the season, the Delta Devils recorded some big wins, beating Grambling 84-78 and Alabama A&M 65-54; and
WHEREAS, the Delta Devils enjoyed a No. 1 seed in the Southwestern Athletic Conference Basketball Tournament, but it was not enough to overcome an equally hungry Jackson State University team; and
WHEREAS, the Delta Devils fell 71-81 to the Tigers Saturday evening in the championship game at the Birmingham-Jefferson Civic Center Arena; and
WHEREAS, the team kept its aspirations for a tournament championship alive upon being selected to participate in the 2007 Postseason Men's National Invitation Tournament, the teams first postseason bid since advancing to the NCAA Tournament in 1996; and
WHEREAS, the roster of the 2006-2007 Delta Devils is as follows: Ronald Alexander, Sr.; Demarkus Barnes, Junior; Kadrian Bryant, Senior; Richard Cannon, Senior, Michael Clark, Sophomore; Larry Cox, Junior; Adaiah Curry, Senior; Markkus Davis, Freshmen; Mike Davis, Junior; Carl Lucas, Junior; Wayne Parks II, Junior; Jeremy Pittman, Junior; Jefferey Price, Senior; Darius Simmons, Junior; Tychicus Snow, Senior; and Stanford Speech, Junior; and
WHEREAS, it is with great pride that we recognize the accomplishments of this group of university student athletes who have brought honor to their university, their community and to the State of Mississippi:
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE STATE OF MISSISSIPPI, That we do hereby commend and congratulate the Mississippi Valley State University Delta Devils Men's Basketball Team, Head Coach James Green and Assistant Coaches Reggie Sharp and Mike Smith for winning the Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) Regular Season Title and for their outstanding 2006-2007 record, and extend best wishes on their future athletic and academic endeavors.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That copies of this resolution be forwarded to Coach James Green, Assistant Coaches Reggie Sharp and Mike Smith, the President of Mississippi Valley State University and to the members of the Capitol Press Corps.
