A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION COMMENDING AND CONGRATULATING MS. KARLA SMITH FOR BEING SELECTED AS INSTRUCTOR OF THE YEAR AT THE JEFFERSON DAVIS CAMPUS OF THE MISSISSIPPI GULF COAST COMMUNITY COLLEGE.
WHEREAS, Ms. Karla Smith, a resident of Gulfport, Mississippi, has been selected as Instructor of the Year at the Jefferson Davis Campus of the Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College in recognition of her distinguished service to the college; and
WHEREAS, the award was established by the Alumni Association of the Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College to honor instructors at the college, and the recipient of the award is chosen from nominations submitted by students, faculty and administrators, on the basis of their teaching excellence, college service, community service and professional development; and
WHEREAS, Ms. Karla Smith, a sociology, world civilization and marriage and family instructor, has been employed at Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College for the past 12 years and has taught for the past 20 years; and
WHEREAS, Ms. Karla Smith received her associate of arts degree from Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College and her bachelor of science and master of education degree from the University of Southern Mississippi; and
WHEREAS, Ms. Karla Smith serves as Chair of the Jefferson Davis Campus Social Studies department; and
WHEREAS, Ms. Karla Smith is a sponsor of the Future Educators of America; is a member of the Jefferson Davis Faculty Association; and is a member of the Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College Alumni Association; and
WHEREAS, Ms. Karla Smith served as a member of the Vice President's Council; and
WHEREAS, Ms. Karla Smith serves as a Captain for the Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College Foundation Promise Campaign; and
WHEREAS, Ms. Karla Smith is a member of Delta Kappa Gamma Society International education organization and serves as a local chapter and state officer; is a member of the National Council for the Social Studies, Mississippi Historical Society and Mississippi Council for the Social Studies; and
WHEREAS, it is the policy of this Legislature to recognize and commend such outstanding teachers as Ms. Karla Smith, who has dedicated her career to teaching the young people of this state:
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE STATE OF MISSISSIPPI, THE SENATE CONCURRING THEREIN, That we do hereby commend and congratulate Ms. Karla Smith for being selected as Instructor of the Year at the Jefferson Davis Campus of the Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College and extend to her heartiest wishes for success in all her future endeavors.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That copies of this resolution be furnished to Ms. Karla Smith and to the members of the Capitol Press Corps.
